Dorothea folded her arms across her chest and hugged her knees close to her chest. Her mouth curved downwards. Fine. Spike didn’t want to talk. Who was she to probe him about something he didn’t want out in the open? He didn’t want pity? Well it was only going to make walls build up. But at least she could distract him with something that wasn’t addressing the incident.
“How’d you discover your power?”
Such a boring icebreaker, but it was the only question she had.

Spike looked up. He hadn't expected that. But it looked like Dorothea wasn't going to press him, and neither was Zelda. Were they just waiting for the right moment? Or being genuinely nice? He liked to hope it was the latter, and honestly, they really hadn't shown much that would make him suspect the former. Sure, Zelda could be a little prickly sometimes, but she wasn't mean. They'd stepped in pretty fast when he had been in trouble, and he'd just been cold to them. He sighed, realizing he'd acted like a jerk. And that made some of the walls around him relax a little. "Okay, I get what you're trying to do," he said. "I'm...better." He finally took the towel Zelda had plopped next to him, wrapping it around his shoulders. "Thanks for the towel. And...coming in after me."

“Seriously, what part of ‘no’ do people not understand?” Zelda muttered. “You had no interest in joining and yet..” she trailed off, not wanting to start the situation of a traumatized Spike over. Loathe to admit, a part of her felt good seeing the “cool kids” get ruffled. It made her see that they were human, be they supers or just regular high schoolers. A tiny part of her suddenly felt bad for making that assumption. Spike had been fearful and she took joy it that. Suddenly she felt sick and guilty. She had misjudged Link until he saved her life…and now he was gone.
Dorothea rolled her eyes. “Tell me about it. Nowadays it’s always me me me and not we. Drives me nuts. Even in the theatre world, people would fuss because they didn’t get the parts they wanted or messed up something on stage and it ate them up.”

"Oh, you've got a lot of drama queen stories?" Spike asked, latching onto that. Hearing Dorothea tell funny theater stories sounded like the distraction he needed. Zelda was still looking sour and was muttering under her breath, although Spike couldn't catch what she was saying. He felt kind of bad that his and Dorothea's attempt at dragging her to a party had kind of ended in disaster. Maybe next time she could take the two of them to something she liked.

Dorothea laughed. Well, the good news was the dismay of people seemed to be the right kick to get Spike out of his funk. Mission accomplished. She bit her bottom lip, searching for a good incident that wasn’t overly gossipy but still a good laugh. “One summer, the ensemble had this amazing older woman. She was also the understudy for the Wicked Witch. But, my god, she could not let go that she was just understudy and ensemble. It was all she talked about! During rehearsal breaks, in the green room…I almost threw water onto her for real,” She laughed again. “But that would be an insult to the bucket, and our actual witch.”

"What, she didn't try killing the actress to steal her part?" Spike joked. Wasn't that how it usually went with jealous understudies? He was about to make another comment when his nose suddenly itched and he sneezed. It looked like the chill from the water was setting in despite the weather, although the towel was helping a little. "Might have to call it a day," he said, figuring there was no use lingering. He'd have to deal with the repercussions of this another day. "Um...hope this didn't turn parties off for you," he said to Zelda.

“Next time, be sure to tell me that the party I’ll be going to contains…less riffraff.” After spitting out the cold comment, Zelda followed it up with something positive. “Although this was a…much livelier party than the ones I’m usually forced to attend.” There was also no pressure to reject the invitation. Dorothea had said she could leave whenever. Until Spike showed up, her plan had been to escape. Her head was not as light as it had once been, courtesy of the water Dorothea had provided.
“Don’t worry, Zelle, we’ll be sure nothing like it happens ada in,” Dorothea couldn’t make it a promise, but she could give her neighbor turned friend sone much needed reassurance. “Oh, and give Namine my hellos.”

Spike just nodded in reply. Maybe he would save the crazier events for Dorothea. She seemed right at home with this type of crowd. "Next time, it'll be quieter," he said. "And...closer to dry land." He'd probably avoid anything near the ocean for a while. Just thinking about it made his hands tremble and he curled them into a fist to keep them still.

“Yes. We’ll save the water for the fish,” Dorothea said agreeably. The only other person she could think of with a love for water was Katara, but there had been enough splashing around. Besides, even with water she couldn’t see bookish Katara hanging with Spike. She deliberately looked away from the ocean, away from Spike, squeezing some water from the ends of her hair. Spike’s reaction worried her, but pestering him about it would do no good. ((End thread))
