Namine had realized that in attending classes, she had the most drab wardrobe out of all the female students. A plain white dress for every day of the week and a simple pair of sandals were all she had to her name. Her uncle hadn't wanted to spend any money he earned on anything she might want. He went for function rather than fashion. But as she stood in the sea of colors, she couldn't help but feel completely utterly out of her element. She swallowed thickly and looked over at her roommate. She had been the one to suggest this, but Namine felt like she would rather see that Cinderblock again.

If Zelda had her way, she would be in the library with her nose in a book or surfing the web on her Slate. Instead, she was shopping with her roommate Namine. The two of them got along. Both were very much homebodies. However, Namine expressed disdain for her white dress and a desire to update her wardrobe. Zelda, who practically lived in her jeans, hated to admit that she herself needed an update as well. They both walked into the boutique, and while Zelda had the money to buy several items, she hated that something like a cute shirt could be worth an asinine amount more fitting for tech repairs. “Anything strike your fancy so far?” she asked.

"I-I... there's so many choices."
She knew a full spectrum of colors existed. And it was one thing to see that on her roommate and people around her, but this was like a sea. She was surrounded by color pops on all sides. She had half a mind to turn around and go back to the dorm, hiding under her covers. She knew Zelda would never allow it.

“Could be worse. The clothes could look like a rainbow vomited on them.”
Zelda stole a glance to a series of hangers. The sizes of the particular shorts that she liked were too small. So much for making things equal for all. She stayed away from the warm colors. Every time she wore something bold like orange or yellow, she felt washed out. Cooler colors were more in her comfort zone. “Maybe we just stick to one side of the color wheel. It’ll be less overwhelming that way.”

"My uncle always bought my clothes for me," Namine said softly.
She wasn't even sure what she liked in clothing. Not when she was simply told all her life 'this was what you were wearing'. She didn't even know what styles she wanted to try. It was just easier to defer to someone else's opinion, but at the same time... she wanted to make some decisions for herself. It was why she asked Zelda for help, though it had taken her weeks to work up the nerve to even do that.
"What do you think I should wear?" she asked.

“I’m not as good as that one singer in our hallway with this stuff. She always has such fashionable taste. Frankly I think you should try whatever makes you feel comfortable. If it doesn’t feel right, than there’s no problem in leaving it”
She should have asked the brown haired girl to come with them. But she was showing interest in that glee club. Zelda wouldn’t be caught dead singing and dancing on stage. Now she and Namine were drowning in clothing racks. As she pawed through the racks in her size, Zelda beamed at a dark red tunic dress. With leggings, she’d feel comfortable. Heck, wear a white T-shirt under it with her jeans and call it a day.

Namine hummed quietly. They probably should have added that girl but that would have involved talking to someone else. Someone Namine hadn't drawn before. And therefore knew how to act around. She had no visions about how shopping would go, perhaps because Namine herself was so indecisive about her options. Taking a deep breath, she began to delve into the rows. So far, she was in the dress section. Go with what she knew.
"How have your class been?"
Please indulge this, Namine thought, I need the distraction.

“Boring.”
Zelda had no reports about her classes in all honesty. With her tech powers, she could bypass the professors in classes where she struggled, such as elemental magic. Truth be told, Professor Constantine made it too easy with his seeming lack of care. Other classes, she excelled in. Hard to find joy in constant cleverness, though her heart did swell with pride every time a professor used her work as an example of doing the right thing. But Namine probably didn’t want to hear all of that.
“I met someone. Another mechanical genius. His name is Albedo.”

Namine sucked in a breath when she found a navy and white plaid dress with little golden stars embroidered as accent pieces with puffy white sleeves, sheer with more stars. She had perhaps not wanted something any more in her entire life. But she looked up sharply when Zelda mentioned meeting someone.
“I think I know him. He’s in my Criminal Investigations class,” Namine murmured. “I don’t think it’s so much mechanical as it is… just genius. He’s really smart.”
Not to mention arrogant.

“Smart. Yes.”
Albedo was forgotten when Namine pulled out a dress that looked like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. If she were going to a fancy ball. The stars were delicate but sweet. It wasn’t bold. Namine would look adorable in it. Her green eyes glittered.
“Namine, you have to try that on. I like this one for me.” She held up her red find. But then she saw the price tag. “We’ll, I like it but not for that much.” Laughing, she hung it back on the rack.

"Where would I wear it? It's too fancy and formal!" Namine protested, trying to put the dress back onto the rack.
She had money, yes. She was allowed to keep the money her uncle earned because technically, she had earned it. But it felt like dirty money to her. Like she didn't deserve to have it. Plain. She had to blend in, not stand out. Not do anything to attract attention because she wasn't worth it.
"I... could buy it for you if you liked it?" she offered. "Since you're helping me?"

Zelda shook her head. “Namine. It’s your pick. If you like it, you should at least see how it looks on you. I like the stars. Not too flamboyant.”
Dresses were not really Zelda’s choice of fashion. Yet in these racks, she couldn’t help but be drawn to certain styles. None of the posh clothing she wore as a senator’s daughter, either. A few styles were like it, but others were simpler. Here she was saying she wanted to stick to cool colors, but a flash of pink caught her attention. Not so much a bright pink, but a subdued darker color. The sleeves were long, and the collar, sleeves and hem were trimmed with simple yellow embroidery. She read the price tag. Discounted. Yes!

Namine hesitated but picked up the dress. Along with another off the shoulder with a lace collar that was sky blue. It was a soft material that made her itch to draw it fluttering in the breeze. But she had left her paper and pencil behind. Without it, she felt a bit exposed.
"I know... I know..." she said softly, "This is why I brought you along."
If she hadn't, she likely would have ended up with more white dresses instead.

Namine’s second pick made Zelda’s jaw drop. It was like something out of her drawings. Even the shade of blue was perfect. Soft but not to the point of being confused for white. Heck, the criticism of constantly being in white was why they were here. “I love that one. It makes your eyes pop.”

Namine felt her cheeks go warm at the compliment. She still wasn't used to that sort of thing. It did make her hold onto the dress a little tighter and silently hope that it fit when they went to the change room. The thought of having something new, that looked good on her, made her feel warm and giddy.
"What about you?" she asked. "Are you finding anything?"
