Caspar didn't have very many hobbies. Mostly it was working out, training and eating. Musical or creative hobbies never appealed to him. But even he had to admit that Dorothea had a wonderful singing voice. And the way she gave it her all was endearing. Her passion was absolutely clear.

As Dorothea finished, she heard cheers all around. A group in Gothic/scene attire were nodding in approval and she was certain one girl was about to run up and hug her. She set the microphone back in place and walked back to Caspar. Karaoke would still be going on for a while, so she could sign up again whenever she could. Her steaming mozzarella sticks smelled like deep fried heaven, and she bit into it with a happy hum

"You're really good at that!" Caspar said.
He pushed the plate of mozzarella sticks closer to Dorothea so she could enjoy the hot food too. He was already tucking into his food as well, finally feeling a lot better than he had before. A big fight always took it out of him. He was told that his metabolism burned like fire during instances of intense exercise.
"Did you go to school for it?"

Dorothea swiped another mozzarella stick greedily and munched before answering Caspar. “You could say that. I had private voice lessons, was part of choirs to learn harmonies…my voice is also my superpower, so I figured I might as well train it like you would train any other part of your body.” Her mother had signed her up for every music program before Dorothea was old enough to attend Hero High. While her voice was acclaimed, her ability to make friends was not.

"Makes sense to me!" Caspar said.
He liked the fact that she explained it and didn't make him feel bad for not knowing much about it. There were some people that explained things to him like he was a five-year-old. School might not have been his first and utmost priority, but it didn't mean his IQ was lower than the room temperature.
"How'd you figure out you had voice powers?"

“Apparently I have the same superpower as my father. Makes sense it would get passed down.”
Well, it was a half truth. Dorothea only knew her father’s beautiful vocals were part of his whole “charm” superpower. Then there was the messy divorce debacle that she didn’t truly understand. But Caspar didn’t need to know that. She swigged her drink before continuing.
“I found out when I started noticing people following me around after I finished singing in a choir. Sort of a dazed, tired look. When I sang, they just stood there. It was freaky honestly.”

"I have super strength," Caspar offered up. "I found out when I punched a punching bag in the gym across the room and through a wall."
Now that had been embarrassing. He knew everyone always thought it was so cool having super strength, but it was hard being unable to fully control his own strength. Freaky was the best word to use to describe it. Breaking doors off their hinges, shattering anything even remotely fragile, not trusting himself with anything other than plastic cutlery and metal plates because he was too strong for his own good.
"I break stuff all the time too. Even now."

“Hopefully no gets hurt from the accidents and breaks. Not that you don’t mean to hurt them, I get it.”
Super strength was one of those powers that many people talked about. What people didn’t talk about was the toll the strong people had. Yes, being able to lift a car as easily as lifting a pebble didn’t sound so bad, but Dorothea knew physical strength often hid a weakness for mental and emotional strength, too

"I'm as careful as I can be."
It was one of Caspar's greatest fears. Accidentally hurting someone. He wanted to be a good guy. Which meant protecting people and ensuring nothing bad befell them. Thankfully, he hadn't broken anything in a while, but that didn't mean he was scotch free in that aspect. He was pretty sure his shield from today's hydra fight was cracked. But it did act as a wedge in the monster's mouth... So it might not have been him.

Dorothea sighed with a soft smile. Caspar certainly was a well meaning kid, and she did find that outlook adorable. It was a healthy way to live. She just wish she could do the same. Sure, she acted like she did, but her time with the theatre crowd and finding some insecurity through things that weren’t her singing voice just didn’t end up in her hands,
“Well, you used them to stop a hydra from turning the city into a playground. That’s proof enough.”

"I actually just got tossed around a lot. There were other people who took out the actual monster."
It was what he was there for. To take the hits as the big tough guy that he was. He could handle it a lot better than some of the other heroes. He still felt bad because their professor was hit. If he had been smarter, faster, he could have done something to prevent it.

“Defense is just as good as offense, though, right? Sure, you maybe gave most of the beatings, but without you, people would have gotten hurt and others might not have had the openings they needed.”
Just as Dorothea said that safe bit, a singer complained into the microphone about it being the wrong song, diverting her musical tuned ears over. The harried DJ quickly made an adjustment, correcting the introduction and the preferred song played. The singer started singing and…oh…there was nothing nice that could be said.
“Think your super strength could make me some headphones? I swear, some people should not sing at karaoke, I don’t care how drunk they are.”

"I think I can do you one better."
He reached into his gym bag and pulled out his headphones. He liked to use them during his workouts as they were noise cancelling. He had been changed into his gym clothes after the fight with the hydra. He had needed to get out of his dented armor after all.

The drunk singer was not getting any better. She went from going off key to straight up off rhythm. A few people were openly walking away from the Crow Bar, and tipping the DJ. Dorothea didn’t need super hearing to hear some people were asking him to stop the dreaded song. Caspar handed her a tiny box. The logo was that of a pair of wireless earbuds. Fancy ones.
“Are you sure? These are expensive!”
Suddenly, the climax of the song…being sung by an angry rooster….came bellowing in. Nope. Dorothea opened the box and crammed the headphones in. The silence was sweet relief and she exhaled, slumping over her now empty plate with a sigh.

Caspar smiled and put the box back into his bag. He could see the relief on her face for the headphones. He watched the singer on the stage, noting the way they swayed slightly. It was only another two-minute song, but other patrons were looking equally uncomfortable as it swung into a fast part with a lot of vowels. It sounded like a cat with its tail caught in a doorway. He took a drink instead of commenting on the poor singer's less than stellar performance.
