"I can relate to that," Shiro said. Granted, his parents probably would have been fine with any occupation he chose, but ever since he was a kid, he'd wanted to be a superhero like his father. Although over the years, his mother had told him time and again that he wasn't just like him, that just because his father's career had taken a nose dive didn't mean his would too. That fear still lingered in Shiro's mind though.

"You have family who are heroes too?" Ruby asked. "Anyone I might know?"
She wasn't entirely sure he would know her family. She hardly looked anything like her father or her sister, instead, taking after her mother. Plus, no one in her family had genetic abilities. Just their own unique powers to each and every one of them. Not that it was a bad thing, necessarily. They made their powers their own.

Oh jeez. Maybe Shiro shouldn't have said that. Now Ruby was curious. He hated lying, but his family history was a sore subject. Maybe he could just omit some of the truth. "Um, probably not. They're not really doing hero work anymore," he replied. "But tell me about your family. Are your parents in the field?" Maybe Shiro knew them, or at least had heard of them.

"My dad retired after my mom passed away. You probably heard of her. She was Summer Rose." Ruby said, aiming for nonchalance, but there was a wobble to her voice that happened every time she spoke about the woman. "But my uncle and sister are also heroes. My uncle taught me how to use my scythe!"
Her sister - the blazing firecracker that she was - and her uncle - the unfortunate bad luck charm to the battlefield - were too impossibly popular heroes. Partially because of their impressive resume in heroism, partly because they were particularly good lookers. Her dad just couldn't fight anymore after he lost her mom. No one faulted him. His heart had broken too many times to be whole again. It's why it just about broke his heart a third time when Ruby declared her intentions to be a hero.

"Oh. I'm sorry," Shiro said. Ruby mentioned her mom passing away so casually, Shiro wasn't sure if she was used to the loss by now or if she was just pretending that it still didn't hurt. Shiro liked to think he was over his dad's death, but every now and then, something would set him off and he'd feel sad and angry and hurt all over again. He wasn't sure if he'd ever escape the feeling.

Ruby waved her hand, as if to dissipate the sadness. She hadn't meant to make her professor sad, but she was just a very honest person. He had asked and she had answered. But she knew she had to change the topic, before it made things worse.
"I came to school to be a hero, just like my parents." she said. "Dad insisted I come to school. Did you graduate from here, Professor?"

Ruby waved the matter aside as if it was nothing. Shiro let it go for now. Maybe Ruby had accepted her mother's death and had healed from it. If only he could say the same about his father. But she changed the subject, asking if he had went to school at Hero High. "Yup. Knew from the get-go that this was where I wanted to be," he said. "Never thought of doing anything else." Sometimes he did wonder what he'd do if he wasn't a superhero, but honestly, he usually failed to come up with an answer. He liked his job. He liked saving people and helping kids become heroes.

"I never really thought about what I wanted to do aside from be a hero," Ruby said.
If she was ever injured into retirement, or if the hero thing never worked out, she hadn't given it much thought. She had figured it was just a natural thing for her to be a hero. But not everyone became a hero. She honestly wanted to do good in the world. And she had higher aspirations than pizza delivery girl.

"Well, looks like you're doing pretty good delivering pizzas," Shiro joked. But it did look like Ruby was heading towards of her goal of being a hero with everything she had. Shiro had to respect that. It took a lot of drive to see what you wanted to do and go for it, trying your hardest to make it. Shiro knew some kids just wanted to be heroes for the fame and fortune, and he admired those who wanted to be one to help people, like the way it should be.

"Oh. That's because my dad said I don't get allowance anymore," Ruby said.
She understood her dad cutting her off. He gave her just enough for her school expenses but no more than that. She was certain if she had any emergencies come up like an unexpected medical emergency or likewise, if she asked, her family would provide. But other than that, she was on her own. If she wanted money for 'fun stuff' like movies, or comics or just hanging out, she had to earn it.
"It's a little like cheating though since I'm really fast."

Ouch. That probably wasn't fun. But it was also important to teach kids how to make their own money. He laughed a little at Ruby commenting about how her super speed was almost like cheating at her job. "Hey, is it cheating when a firefighter uses their water powers to put out a fire? Or when a technopath uses their abilities to fix a computer? We were given these powers for a reason. Might as well make the most of them," he said.

"Well, no one complains when their food deliveries are as hot as if they were in the restaurant themselves," Ruby laughed.
She was a bit of a pushover too. She tended to get taken in by little old ladies or homebodies who needed their groceries delivered. People who needed deliveries fast and easy. She always liked it because she could eat things in the comfort of her home and still have it fresh.

"If they ever do, they're probably a 'Karen'," Shiro said, making air quotes around the word. Wasn't that the term kids used these days for unreasonable lady customers? Shiro had seen plenty of guys act that way too, but he knew the point they were trying to make. Heroes used to deal with it all the time, people suing them for backwards reasons, but it didn't happen nearly as much as it used to.

"I get those too. Rose petals sort of trail behind me, but they disappear," Ruby explained.
Besides, roses smelled nice. Maybe a bit too pungent with the floral scent but Ruby would rather smell roses than other things. It's not like she intended for the roses to follow her. It was just something that happened. But it wasn't the worst side effect to a power.

"Better rose petals than something gross," Shiro said. "I've met a few kids whose powers involve slime. They tend to leave a gooey trail everywhere they go." Granted though, it could come in handy sometimes. Any grossness might freak out certain bad guys long enough for someone to get a hit in. Or help them stick to surfaces easily. The closest Shiro could get to that was if someone brought in a large, high-power magnet. If he was fully covered in metal, he didn't stand a chance against magnetism.
