Ruby's new job was an easy one. She was a delivery girl. No one in town was as fast as her. Deliveries always made it on time. Food was as hot and as ready as if it just came out of the oven. Now, this was an odd one for her. Since teachers didn't normally order take out, but she walked into the teacher's lounge to drop off the pizza. The instructions clearly said to take it up there. But a whole pizza? Hopefully, this wasn't a person's entire meal and the teachers were sharing or something.
"Pizza delivery!" she called as she walked into the teacher's lounge.

Shiro glanced at the clock. The staff get-together would be starting soon. While there wasn't really a special occasion, stuff like this was a good way for some of the teachers to let off steam and not focus on work for a little while. And they were handy for any new hires to get to know their co-workers. Shiro had been the one to suggest pizza, so he'd been designated to get it sorted before everyone else arrived. Sure enough, the pizza arrived right on time, delivered by one of his students no less. "Oh, Ruby, hello there," he greeted. "Didn't know you were in the pizza business."

"Hi Mr. Williamson!" Ruby greeted.
She set his pizza down on the table and flashed him a smile. She was a little relieved it was Shiro and not someone like Constantine. It wasn't that she disliked Professor Constantine, but she wasn't about to start running him favors either. She had a feeling those favors might get her into trouble. Pizza for a Professor wasn't a bad favor. He was human too and who didn't like the cheesy goodness of pizza? Crazy people. That's who.
"I'm not technically in the pizza business. Just deliveries. No one is as fast as me!" she laughed.

"I believe that," Shiro said. He'd seen Ruby during class, hand-to-hand combat was kind of hard to do when your opponent was someone as fast as her. But running into a situation where your powers went kaput was inevitable, so it was important to learn how to defend yourself when you couldn't rely on super speed or flight or anything like that. "Been busy today?" he asked, fishing for his wallet so he could give a tip.

"A little," Ruby shrugged. "But I like helping people out."
She especially liked the times she was asked to bring groceries to people who needed help. They got what they needed lickity split! Plus, it kept her busy. Not to mention, it gave her an allowance for her comics and other fun stuff she liked to do in her down time.
"Is there a staff meeting today?" she asked. "Or is this lunch and dinner?"
She had zero judgment if he just ate the whole thing solo. She knew some people had powers that burned their metabolism so they had to eat a lot.

Shiro gave a little laugh. "Staff party. I don't think I can eat that much pizza in one sitting," he replied. Maybe back in his high school days, he could have pulled it off. He'd gone through the usual phase of wanting to eat everything in sight once puberty had kicked in. "Here, this is for you," he said, handing Ruby a tip.

"Thanks Professor!" Ruby chirped.
She glanced over her shoulder and out the window. It had begun to rain. She sighed. Well, that put a damper on her food running business. Unless she wanted to test whether or not she was fast enough to outrun rain? She debated it but decided not to test it if she was delivering packages. Soggy paper bags tended to rip and then she'd lose the contents of people's groceries.
"Hey, since you're here, do you have the dates for the next hand to hand combat training?" she asked.

Shiro noticed the rain long with Ruby. She looked a little anxious about it. Delivering pizzas in weather like that wouldn't be fun. "How about you stay here for a bit until the rain stops?" he suggested. "Don't want you getting sick." Shiro himself didn't mind stormy weather too much, unless he was on a mission and needed to use his powers. He'd rusted a few times over the years and it was always a pain to deal with. "Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of next week," he replied. "I think you guys are getting the basics down pretty well. Now we can start branching off into whatever style you gravitate towards." Some students like karate more, others liked tai chi or tae kwon do. Whatever they felt like was their niche, Shiro liked to help them steer in that direction and at least get them started. If they wanted to really learn the ins and outs of a particular style, that was a bit out of his range, but there were plenty of people he could recommend that could teach all the fine details.

"Hand to hand combat isn't really my thing," Ruby admitted sheepishly. "It's my sister's favorite though! She's amazing!"
She flashed a dazzling smile, practically glowing as she thought about her heroic sister - already out in the world, saving the day, kicking butt and looking good doing it. She wanted to be just like her. Even if that meant taking classes that weren't her favorite. She knew that ultimately, all the classes would make her a better hero. She just had to buckle down and study harder.
"How... do you get through classes you don't like?" she asked. "Not that I dislike yours but... I'm not doing well in some of them."

"Sounds like she's got a good head on her shoulders," Shiro commented. He wondered if he'd ever met Ruby's sister out in the field. He'd have to look into that. Ruby got a little quiet though and asked about getting through classes that were a little tougher. "I know what you mean, kid. I had some tough times in school too," Shiro replied. His father dying had completely changed him, and dealing with the loss on top of trying to pass his classes had been difficult. "Honestly, asking for help never hurts, either from the teachers or the other students. I think there's tutoring sessions in the library every now and then."

"Wait, you had trouble in school? But you're so..."
She had a hard time putting it to words since she wasn't entirely sure what it was that her professor was. He was mature. And seemed to be no nonsense (at least in class). He had to have some sense of fun since he had a good pizza order.
"Well, you!"

Shiro gave a little laugh. "Thank you, but everyone has problems, even me." At least Ruby didn't know the details about everything he'd gone through. Some students liked to be nosy and dig up his past and it was always a bit uncomfortable. "I had some family drama going on at the time, and it affected how I did in school. Took a while to pick myself up and get back on my feet."

Ruby knew a thing or two about family drama. She lost her mother. Then her uncle turned to drinking like a fish. He spent long periods of time away from home. Her dad suffered and tried to be a single father of two girls, which he was completely unprepared for. Her sister became like a second parental figure to her.
"Well, I think you're great, Professor," Ruby said with utmost sincerity.

Shiro tried not to show it too much, but Ruby's compliment did mean a lot. While he didn't really do the whole sidekick thing, part of him still wondered if something would go wrong for him like it had for his dad. But so far, things were going okay. And it looked like some of them even liked him. "Thanks," he replied. "But don't sell yourself short. You're pretty good, too. You're well on your way to becoming a full fledged hero."

"Well, being a hero is practically the family business. I'm not sure what I'd be doing if I weren't in school like this!"
Sure, she was doing the delivery thing as a part time side hustle to have spending money, but that was usual teenager stuff. She couldn't imagine ever working an office job. She had grown up raised by heroes and fed stories for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
