John set his mug down to scrub a hand over his face. He couldn't recall the last time he had been to a baseball game. Or any sporting event for that matter. That involved going out and being around people. Which only made him want to drink more (and that was saying something considering his current habit). Being around people tended to make him depressed. He remembered watching rugby in his younger days. A right proper sport and less complicated than football versus football/soccer.

Jack's comment sparked Pocahontas's memory. "Yes, oh jeez, people were talking about that for ages," she said. Truthfully, the animal lover in her had felt sorry about the poor bird, but sometimes, that was just how things worked. Even in nature, stupid stuff like that happened to animals just because they were in the wrong time at the wrong place. Pocahontas glanced at John, noticing he was still quiet. "Got any sports stories, John?" she asked, attempting to draw him back into the conversation. Maybe he'd be a little less sullen now that his drinking wasn't being brought up.

"Hmm? Nah. Nothin' that ain't endin' in a fight."
Football matches often ended in copious amounts of drinking. And particularly rowdy fights if a certain team lost. Someone spilled a drink, said the wrong thing to the wrong angry fan and then they decided to have a chinwag with fists. At least in his hometown of London. Europe was especially passionate about the sport. When was the last time he had gone to a match? It had to have been ages. Not since he and his friend Richie went back when they were as young as their prospect students.

"So, soccer then. Last time I went to one of those games was with mi familia."
The Mexican soccer team wasn't anywhere as big as the cities across the pond, or heck the United States had more of an edge when it came to watching soccer, but Jack felt there was something invigorating about watching it in his home turf. Maybe it was the taste of the barbacoa tacos while watching everyone dance around the ball. Maybe it was the old lady holding a chancla as a meek threat.

Somehow, John's answer didn't surprise Pocahontas too much. Jack didn't either, although he had a good idea about the kind of sport that might cause a fight. "Really? People get that intense?" she asked. Maybe she was just used to football being the dominant sport around here. The Superbowl was practically like a national holiday, not that Pocahontas cared for it much. She just liked the funny commercials and the good food if someone happened to be throwing a party.

"Where I'm from, it ain't a team sport 'less there are drinks."
Get enough people together and get them drunk enough and there were bound to be fights. Especially since pubs tended to show the sporting events to get people in. Pubs, plus a bad game, plus angry fans was a recipe for a fight. He wasn't above saying he was one of them. He was pretty sure he had fought in his fair share of bar fights.

"Typical European jock get together then."
While Jack hadn't been to any parts of Europe, he had witnessed the rowdiness of the crowds during the Olympics, or when he had been channel surfing as a child and came upon the games from across the pond. It also depended on the venue probably. If the arena was closed, the then the pubs were open. Drunkards galore and fights to be broken out.

So Jack was used to that sort of thing. Or, at least, it didn't surprise him. Maybe that said something about people. It didn't matter what country it was or what the sport was, people were bound to start something either way. "I think the only time I want to seem enthusiastic at sports is when the school throws a pep rally," she said. Sports were a part of the curriculum, mainly to help students exercise and teach teamwork. She'd seen participating on a team boost more than a few kids' confidence. Others, well, the confidence kind of went to their heads. Every school had its jocks, after all.

"Please tell me there are no bloody pep rallies here," John lamented.
The United Kingdom did not host such events. He felt that it was an overdone sort of thing to encourage animosity between schools. He would absolutely not attend the pep rally even if it was required. He was already being tortured enough by being forced to teach. He didn't want to be here but that would be an absolute special circle of hell if he was. He took a deep drink of his coffee. Even the hint of whiskey couldn't take the edge off the emotional trauma of having to deal with a bunch of teenagers.

"There used to be pep rallies here, at least back when I was a student here, but I don't know if we still do them. Too much risk of people getting hurt with unbridles powers, apparently." Or at least that was the excuse he had been told. It made sense. Teenagers could be a rowdy bunch. Put them together and get them overly excited about something, and the gym could have been leveled or frozen or turned into a pile of ash. "Personally, it got tiresome after junior year. Only so much enthusiasm you could give for one team."

"Eh, they try to get them going every once in a while to boost school spirit or whatever," Pocahontas replied. "It's either that or kids use that energy for something else, like throwing wild parties in their dorm rooms." Granted, Pocahontas had been too much of a goody-goody to ever sneak into one of those as a teenager, but she'd heard plenty of stories about them. She enjoyed parties as an adult though, especially if there was good music. She loved to dance.

John made a face. He was practically a babysitter for glorified frat boys and sorority girls when he himself was on a sort of 'recovery' program. It seemed like a bad idea. Especially since it seemed he couldn't be trusted not to drink on the job. Granted, they were absolutely right to believe he would drink. Because he would. Otherwise, the memories would overwhelm him. At least they hadn't carted him off to the loony bin.
"Fantastic," John commented dryly.

“Don’t get me started on dorm parties. Explaining to the police was more of a headache than stopping the incident.” Jack massaged his bony temples. He was recovering from when he had been on dorm duty and heard a karaoke event gone wrong. The student with supersonic screaming had, well, done what she loved and had deafened a good chunk of the student body. Jack had walked in with annoyance. Both from the new migraine and his exhaustion from the time. Teenagers had so much energy…

John and Jack made dour faces at the mention of dorm parties. Pocahontas couldn't tell what they hated more, those or pep rallies. "They do seem to keep finding interesting ways to surprise us, don't they?" she commented. Just when you thought you'd seen everything, you'd stumble across something like a kid with plant powers growing psychedelic mushrooms and passing them around. Or kids with metal powers constructing weapons out of empty beers cans and having battles.

"If that's what you wanna call it," John grumbled.
He knew the mischief he got away with when he was younger. To say he abused his powers was a bit of an understatement. Back in his punk band days, it saved on lighting costs. Even if the music was shite, the light show was always amazing. He wasn't entirely sure what got him down the path of being a goodie goodie. Trying to be a hero. Trying to make the world a better place. At his core, he was a very selfish person. He knew this. Besides, the kids had powers that hadn't existed when he was a brat.
