Ruby responded pretty enthusiastically. Utena thought for a second. What advice would be good for a newbie? "Hmm, let me see..." She thought back to when she'd first started here. It had been a bit intimidating, but she'd put on a brave face for Bella. The classes had been really different from the regular public school she'd gone to before, and a lot of the faces had been new at the time. Thinking back to those days made her come up with a couple of answers. "Expect it to be noisy. Sometimes when people experiment with their powers, things...go a bit awry. And the popular kids like to treat campus like it's party central or a fighting arena." Some kids just loved to push people's buttons to see how they reacted, and that resulted in fights sometimes. "But you'll find some good people, in enough time. And when the teachers aren't piling on homework, they can be pretty cool." They were superheroes themselves after all, and hearing about some of the stuff they'd pulled off fascinated Utena. It made her wonder what kind of stories she would tell once she was a superhero herself.

"I like noisy," Ruby said. "The busier the better!"
She hated being idle. Which was why she had run out first chance she got to explore her surroundings. She had wanted to see what there was around town. And to find something to entertain herself in the meantime. She fully intended to take advantage of this downtime because once classes started, she figured she would be quite busy. But even heroes needed hobbies!

If Ruby didn't mind all the hustle and bustle of the school, she'd probably do just fine. Eager people like her did well in an environment like that. If you were a bit shyer or quieter, it could take a little longer to adjust. Utena remembered Bella being like that for a while. "So, you got any powers or do you fall into the 'I have no powers, but I'll still kick your butt' category?" There were a couple of kids like that and they could handle themselves as well as the others that had powers. Heck, Utena felt like even with her powers, she'd still had to do a bit of work to make sure she could fight well. Recovering fast from injuries wasn't exactly the same as shooting lasers out of your eyes or moving objects with your mind.

"Me? I have super speed!" Ruby said.
With a swirl of red rose petals, she blurred into motion, leaving the book hanging in midair before she raced around the room. Then she landed right back in her spot, snatching up the book before it could hit the floor. She flashed a triumphant smile. She was quite proud of her abilities. She knew that of all the super abilities, it was the most common, but hers was flashy.
"And I have a scythe my uncle got me!"

Whoa, Ruby wasn't kidding. She was fast. She'd probably turn out to be a pretty good superhero once she graduated. Super speed could be used for all kinds of situations: stopping bank robbers, getting people out of a collapsing building, getting a bomb as far away as possible before it went off. Utena was interested though when she mentioned she had a weapon as well. "Oh, cool! You'll have to show me sometime," Utena said. "I've got a sword myself. And rapid healing, but that only helps once the fight is over really."

"I'd really like that!"
To Ruby, her scythe was her baby. And she enjoyed seeing heroes who also favored weapons. Because super speed was nice and all, but it wasn't exactly a deterrent for anything else. Plus, there was something rather badass about carrying a scythe or sword on you as a hero. People knew you meant business when you lugged it into battle with you.

"I just have a sword so far, but I want to learn how to use more once I'm a full hero and stuff," Utena continued. "Like, those bows that shoot explosive arrows could be pretty cool, right? Or ninja stars." Utena felt like there were so many possibilities. Really, Hero High was just the beginning of being a hero. There would be so much to do once she graduated, had her own superhero name, maybe even get her own vehicle, like a cool car or a jet.

"I'd be too afraid to use ninja stars. What if they tear a hole in your pocket and fall out when you need them most?"
She liked them in theory. Actually, she liked all weapons if she were honest. She could spend hours drooling over new weapons and all the potential uses in combat, but she liked to stick with what she knew, which was her scythe. Which was also a gun. But that had taken ages of modification and help from her uncle to get right.

"True. Might have to store them in a bag that's not made out of cloth," Utena acknowledged. "Maybe plastic? Or a metal box." She paused suddenly, realizing she was talking more to herself than Ruby. "Sorry, got a little off track there for a second," she said. "I guess we still have a couple of years to figure all that out, right?"

"Are there really classes that would teach us stuff like that?" Ruby asked.
She could feel her own anticipation building. She wanted nothing more than to get into the field for some first hand training, but that was going to be a long ways off. She couldn't just jump in and start saving people. There were rules. Boring. But they were important enough classes were taught about them. Plus, she wanted to make sure she did stuff by the books so bad guys didn't get away.

"Maybe we figure out some of the specifics on our own once we graduate, but yeah, we'll get taught the basics for everything and tips on how to store stuff," Utena replied. "And there's some weapons and powers that don't mix and they go over stuff like that. Like, someone with fire powers probably shouldn't have bombs as a secondary weapon. Know what I mean?"

"Yeah! I know but I'm just so excited to be able to do this sort of stuff!" Ruby enthused.
She wanted more than anything to jump straight into things, but she knew it wasn't that easy. Still, being left chomping at the bit was what led her to the comic bookstore in the first place. She had needed to do something to get her nervous energy taken care of. And she had been so successful with that. She found a new book and a new friend!
"Do you have any favorite teachers yet?"

"Me too," Utena agreed. The scope of everything they had to learn might seem daunting to some, but Utena was excited about it. At least, the hands-on stuff. Book learning was a little more challenging. Ruby asked if she had any favorite teachers yet and Utena thought for a moment before replying. "I guess they're all neat in their own ways," she replied. "They're nice most of the time and good at what they do." She'd heard rumors that one of the teachers might be an alcoholic, but Utena took that with a grain of salt. Kids always spread stuff like that.

"I hate homework," Ruby confessed, "And bookwork. But this is stuff I have to make an exception for! Like... how can you make super heroing boring?"
She laughed at the prospect of some shriveled old, retired superhero teaching lessons. Doing the typical 'back in my day' story time. She knew that the 'glory days' were important to relive for the first heroes but she wanted to show them just how different things were now. And prove herself.

"Me too," Utena agreed. "I guess some of it's important though. Like, learning about heroes and supervillains from the past and stuff." Stuff like that might come handy in the field, if you came across a situation that was similar to one that happened years ago. Like, it was always important to have a detachable cape if you were going to wear one. Too many superheroes had gotten screwed in the past by capes that had gotten caught on something and they couldn't get out of them.
