"Ugh, stop! I'm going to die if we have to learn history!" Ruby lamented.
She and history went together like oil and water. Meaning they didn't. But it was a hero's job to learn these things, no matter how tedious or mind-numbingly boring they were. It's why she picked up her comic books. At least she could escape schoolwork with those!

"Unfortunately, it is required," Utena replied. "But hey, it's not always boring. Sometimes you get to hear about epic showdowns that happened years ago." Big fights between superheroes and supervillains were always interesting to hear about, especially when the villain had the upper hand for a while. That happened sometimes, but the heroes always won in the end and it was important to learn how the fight went down the way it did so others could learn from any mistakes.

"See! The stories are more exciting than the history!"
Ruby grinned. Her mom used to be a hero. She had heard stories ever since she was a little girl. Practically growing up off of tales of daring rescue, brave acts and the good feeling of helping others. Sure, she knew that it came at a lot of self sacrifice too. Her mom had to balance home life with hero work. Baking cookies and busting bad guys. Battling the ever increasing laundry loads and navigating her way across the battlefield.
"So, do you have a favorite hero?" she asked.

"One could make the argument that history is made up of a bunch of stories, really," Utena replied. "Albeit boring ones sometimes." She could see Ruby's point though. Learning about epic fights and big showdowns was more interesting than, say, the partnership between heroes and the police and the long process it took to iron the whole thing out. That had involved a lot of discussion back in the day, revisions on who was responsible for what, establishing checks and balances to make sure heroes didn't abuse their power. That tended to make Utena space out. Ruby asked who her favorite hero was, and honestly, Utena wasn't sure how to answer. "Not sure. I mean, the heroes around here are really cool and stuff. Hard to pick a favorite, you know?" She looked back at Ruby before asking "Do you have one?"

"My favorite hero? Well, that's so hard! Most of my family consist of heroes. My mom, my dad, my uncle, and my sister!" Ruby said.
Her family would never let her 'pick a favorite'. They'd all fight for the spot because they all doted on her so much. Granted, her father had retired after the death of her mother. So, he could be the stay-at-home dad that his daughters needed. Her sister was a new up and coming hero. Her uncle was also known in the community, though, not as well liked.
"But if I had to pick one... I guess I'd say my mom."

"Wow. A family of heroes sounds interesting," Utena said. Her parents hadn't really been into that, despite both having powers. But some people wanted to be that way. Besides, regular jobs could use people with powers too. Utena's mom ran a pretty successful plant nursery thanks to her abilities. She never had to worry about not having enough customers.

Ruby smiled. She knew her family was a little unorthodox when it came to that sort of lifestyle, but it was just what they knew best. It's what they enjoyed doing. At least on her sister and her mother's part. Her father was retired. Her uncle... well, he always seemed like he had fun. But he never really liked to talk about work.
"We like to help people," Ruby said.

"That's all a hero should want, really," Utena commented. "Help people, make the world a little better." Some might think it hopeless since there was always going to be people wanting to do bad things, and Utena couldn't deny that. But taking a stand against it and trying to do some good at least made a little difference. Heck, you didn't even have to be a superhero. Helping people with your job or just being nice put a little more good in the world.

Ruby was glad that Utena saw it that way. Some people were really only in the super hero business to make money. Which was a shame. Her sister did say that she would find others who had like minded thinking at the school. She tucked her book under one arm and pulled out her phone.
"You're freaking awesome. Do you think we could swap phone numbers?" Ruby asked. "I'd love to grab lunch sometime or just hang out."

Utena laughed. "Oh come on, you're flattering me," she said humbly. Honestly, Ruby was pretty cool too. She talked about books and weapons with such passion, Utena was sure she put that same devotion into anything she loved. Being unabashedly enthusiastic about something you liked was a-okay in Utena's eyes. Ruby asked to exchange phone numbers and Utena was more than happy too. "Sure. Here, let's swap." She quickly added Ruby's name to her contacts and handed it over for her to add her number.

Ruby did a little happy dance when she got the new number. Just a side to side shimmy of excitement. And she had been worried about meeting people! This just goes to show she had absolutely nothing to worry about. This school thing was going to be a piece of cake! She would have to let her family know she settled in just fine after all. Despite their teasing and cajoling about how she would stick out like a sore thumb. At least nothing blew up on the first day!
"Thanks! We so have to hang out on campus sometime!" Ruby said. "And I can bring that book I promised!"

Ruby's enthusiasm made Utena smile. Although with the excitement she was showing being a little above average, she wondered if it was hard for Ruby to make friends or something. Bella could be the same way if she made a new friend since it was so difficult for her. But Ruby and Bella were so different. Bella was sensitive and quiet. Ruby was more like a bouncy ball. Maybe that turned some people off? Utena thought that was dumb. "Yes, definitely," she agreed.

"Great! I'll see you around then!"
With a cheery little wave, a skip to her step, she set off to the register to pay for her findings. Ruby felt good knowing there were good people like Utena in school with her. She would make sure to text later to hang out. And possibly study with. Ruby was dreadful in classes.
