"Hey, learning another language is hard, it's okay to get mixed up sometimes," Shiro said. "My mother's family went through the same thing." He may have been born in the U.S., but Shiro's mother had thought it important to pass down her family traditions, including learning Japanese. Shiro remembered thinking it so difficult when he'd first started, especially when it came to writing in Japanese. Now, it was practically second-nature. Learning some other languages might have been fun, but Shiro had drifted towards vehicles instead. Now, he could drive almost anything if given enough time to learn it.

“Another new language? Whatever slang the students come up with. I recently learned the word ‘simp.’ But don’t worry, I won’t put that in any of my lectures. I’m not THAT teacher.” Jack did take pride that he didn’t stoop to the level of trying too hard to be relatable. Yes these students needed teachers they could depend upon, but there was a fine line between friend and mentor. Shiro and Pocahontas were several hero teachers who were able to be approachable to the students. Jack’s skeletal appearance usually had kids freaking out until he said something that they recognized or didn’t take their questions with a scoff.

Shiro snickered. Some teenage lingo he was hip on, others not so much. Recently, he'd heard some kids saying that a popular artist had come out with a song that "really slaps" and he had to ask what the heck that meant. But, he figured that was bound to happen eventually as he got older. "You sure you don't want to brag about how your detective skills are 'on fleek?' he joked.

Jack almost spat out of his coffee from the quip. After finally feeling the liquid go down his bony throat was he able to laugh. At least it had gone down like the smooth waterfall it was supposed to. "Don't tempt me, Shiro. I will put it in one of my lectures and then they'll complain to you, and then Pocahontas will have to pull us apart from fighting like little boys on who the best teacher is."

Okay, Shiro wasn't going to lie, Jack's reaction was hilarious. He laughed along with him, probably earning a look or two from the other people in the cafe. "Eh, we're teachers. Aren't we supposed to be cringe worthy every once in a while in an attempt to relate to the students?" he joked as he finished off his scone. Heck, he remembered teachers doing that when he was a kid. Some had tried to "show off some moves' when a popular song had come on during prom and that had earned many a face-palm.

“Just as long as it doesn’t come back around to parents.” Like any normal teacher, Jack dreaded the inevitable parent teacher conferences. In a school like Hero High, the parents made Tiger moms look like crazy cat ladies. Some supers loved the discipline and “pure blood” aspect of their powers and pressured students to carry in the legacy. Other times, it was a tragic broken home. Jack had always tried to extend a hand to those broken students. It didn’t always work, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t stop.

"They can get nasty sometimes," Shiro agreed. He didn't have much personal experience with it, but he knew parents had freaked out when his dad's sidekick had gotten killed. There had been an outcry to make sure students were safer until they graduated, and some even questioned the integrity of the hero/sidekick program. It had been a huge mess at the time, and while Hero High had made changes to make sure something like that didn't happen again, he knew some people remembered the incident pretty vividly.

"Well, here's to hoping this year's batch wont result in any uncomfortable parent teacher conferences, and at least we aren't public school." What was even the point of them? There was no perfect in between when those were announced. It ended with one of the parties walking away with grievances. And unlike public schools, there was an extra striking of taking out a budget should a superhero child have caused any collateral damage during an emotional meltdown. He still remembered the telekinetic girl who caused a citywide blackout when she broke up with her boyfriend.

"I'll drink to that," Shiro said, raising his little cup of espresso for a moment before downing the rest of it. He was really hoping that if he started off well with teaching, it might be a sign of good things to come. Maybe if he did well enough, it would put everything that happened to his father behind him and everyone else too.

Jack raised his spiced drink high, and after a swig just watched in astonishment as Shiro finished the espresso in record time. “You’re bolder than me, swigging espresso down like it’s chocolate milk.” The last time Jack had espresso, he was so jittery that he was falling apart. Literally. A hand had crumpled and he had to ask his students to help put him back together. He had improvised it so that could identify bond injuries at crime scenes, but either way, it had been embarrassing.

"Trust me, I need the energy," Shiro replied. Teaching his class back to back could be pretty draining. God forbid his students show up at his last class of the day and he was moving as much as a slug. He liked having high energy when showing students a new attack or showing the steps in pulling off a complicated move.

"In fairness, we all do. But at least we aren't Hero Junior High, other wise you would be drinking two espressos instead of one." After he laughed at his own poor joke and sipped the next few drops of his coffee, he asked, "Does it affect the metal you create around yourself? Like is it thinner because your brain chemicals changing?"

“Ugh, I don’t even want to think about that,” Shiro said with a grimace. Teaching kids with superpowers while they just started puberty? That sounded like a nightmare. At least by high school, most kids had a better handle on their emotions. Most of them time anyway. They were still kids after all, and their emotional capacity was still developing. Jack asked about coffee affecting Shiro’s powers and he shook his head. “As far as I can tell, internal stuff doesn’t really affect it, just external. If you poured this on any metal I made, it might rust. Or conduct heat a lot better and give me a nasty burn. Haven’t really been sprayed with hot liquids too much.” He might have to ask a chemist how that would work.

Jack nodded. Metal was a funny thing. Some times, it could be the strongest thing that was created, such as holding up the many skyscrapers in this and multiple cities across the globe. Other times, it was took soft and could be broken easily. It could be worn away over time by water, and like Shiro said, there was the chemical component of rust. Jack could have easily gone on a tangent of how so many crime scenes had rusty metal be a major aspect to data, but that was neither here nor there.

Jack seemed interested, although didn't ask any further questions. Honestly, with some people's powers and their quirky habits, they could probably go on for hours about them. There were always pros and cons to each one, and if you had more than one power, the combination of the strengths and weaknesses could give some interesting results. Shiro felt like his were pretty straight forward though, not much to them. He was interrupted by an alarm on his phone though. He glanced at the time. "Whoa, I've been dawdling too long. I should head back," he said. "We should chill like this more often though. It'll keep us sane in between classes."
