Putting a costumer together hadn't been too hard. Spike had decided to show up as a 50s greaser and he already had the jeans and black leather jacket. All he'd really needed to get was a lot of hair gel to smooth his hair back, although he felt a little odd having is styled this way. He preferred having it poofed up rather than slicked back. Still, he'd gotten a compliment or two, which was nice. Some kids were already dancing to whatever modern pop they had blaring over the speakers, but he didn't like. At least the food wasn't bad though. He felt like his punch needed a little kick though, and he had just the thing to do it. Standing a little out of the way, he poured in a bit of vodka from a flask in his cup and shook it slightly to swirl it around a bit. After that, it tasted a lot better. He figured he had enough alcohol to last the night, unless someone tried to bum some off of him.

The rhythm of the song was starting to get boring g, so Dorothea took a break from being on the dance floor. She was incredibly grateful that instead of wearing heels, she had sufficed with the straw sandals that were flat. It also tied into her costume well. Her dorm neighbors had been sweet in helping her get pieces for the outfit, so in return Dorothea let them borrow some of her old theatre costumes. Her look was a mermaid. A sequined trumpet skirt with green and iridescent tulle, and instead of the classic seashell bra, she had a dark green bandeau which looked like seaweed wrapped in pearl strung fishnet. A drink was calling her name. After serving herself some punch, she went over to the wall and saw she wasn’t alone. A man about her age, dressed like he came off Grease, was doctoring punch with alcohol. Not a bad idea. Booze did make things livelier. She help up her glass and spoke loud enough for him to hear but quiet enough so a teacher wouldn’t catch them.
“Care to share? It’ll cut back on the sugar.”

It didn't take long for someone to find Spike and ask for a bit of the vodka in his flask. Although after looking at her, Spike didn't mind so much. She was pretty, and wearing a mermaid costume rather well. "Sure, although with all the candy and cupcakes they have out here, going into sugar overload is probably going to be a given," he said, pouring a bit of vodka into her cup. Good thing this was a high school party and not something for kids. They would probably be bouncing off the walls with all the sugar around.

The dark haired stranger obliged with a splash of booze into her punch. Vodka, judging from the clearness and the smell. Dorothea could live with that. The fruitiness would mask the booze smell, for now. He made a point that with the sweets spread out, sugar breakout was inevitable. “Thank god I’m not in any performances, then. Sugar isn’t good for the voice.” She wouldn’t bore him with lectures on how sugar clogged up the airways - dairy products did as well - and could turn a high A into a squawk.

"And what kind of performing do you do?" Spike asked curiously. She mentioned sugar not good for the voice, was she a singer? That seemed the most likely, although there was also the possibility of her doing something like stand-up comedy or those poetry night things. Spike didn't care for the latter too much. Too many pretentious people who thought they were being deep.

Dorothea looked into her cup before answering. “I suppose you could say I’m a singer in a variety of styles. Acting, too, but people seem to prefer my voice over that.” That was perhaps the most frustrating part of being in a theatre troupe or in the stage world in general. People would always favor one talent even if you were considered by many to be a triple threat. It was how they had power on stage, she supposed. Not that she’d hoard a spotlight. If anything, she’d be more than happy to share it.

"So, you're a gleek," Spike commented. Glee club people weren't the worst in the world, but musicals weren't exactly his cup of tea. Too overdramatic in his mind, although he knew some would say the same thing about heavy metal. Plus, he felt like Glee the show pretty much ruined a song every time they did a cover of it. They were like the teenage version of Kidz Bop.

Dorothea visibly shuddered. “That show and phrase is an insult to actual hardworking musicians. How many times was Rachel given a solo? And what did she do to deserve said solo? Be a whiny, self centered, borderline criminal brat. Every time people said I looked and sounded like her, I wanted to punch them in the face.” Her face gree scarlet. It wasn’t the vodka that made her flare up, though she supposed it made the rush to the surface faster than she would have liked to admit.

Spike actually laughed at seeing the girl get so worked up. A thespian kid that actually hated the show? It was kind of hilarious. Some might even call it an oxymoron. Then again, he was sometimes the same way with his music preferences. When he told people he liked heavy metal, they automatically thought of screamo where you could barely make out the words. Granted, some of the bands he listened to could get like that, but they still sang actual notes at least some of the time. "Glad we agree on something then," he said. "I'm Spike." He held out his hand for the girl to shake.

So, the stranger that shared disdain for false music was Spike? She was sure to remember that. So far, the only person she really hit it off with so far Bella. Maria had been a sweetheart, but there wasn’t much to make an impression with. Spike, on the other hand, had definitely made an impression. She accepted his handshake, the wrist movement making her hand look like it was floating. “Dorothea. Charmed, I’m sure.”

"Pleasure's all mine," Spike replied with a cheeky grin before sipping from his cup again. He might have to add some more vodka later, but for now, there was enough for him to enjoy the taste. If he was honest though, he probably wouldn't get more than a light buzz tonight. If he wanted to get trashed, he would have had to bring a whole bottle. "So, if gleek stuff isn't your thing, what music do you like performing?" he asked. It was hard to tell just by looking, especially with all the Halloween costumes going around. Any other day though, people could get a good idea of what Spike liked. Band t-shirts made up a good chunk of his wardrobe.

Dorothea sipped her glass, a ring of lipstick smudging the rim. The vodka was still there. Good. “Call it irony, but I do enjoy some glee stuff from time to time, just not constantly. It makes me think of home. But if we’re talking styles I’m safe with singing, I suppose I’m comfortable with almost all styles.” It was the truth. Also the added bonus was because of her superpowers voice, people didn’t complain if she got it wrong. Well the women did and could be cat mean. “You seem to have an interest yourself, there, greaser. What music catches your fancy?”

"Oh jeez, don't tell me you're about to start belting Wicked tunes or something," Spike groaned. Teenage girls seemed to be all over that musical, and a couple of other questionable ones, but he just didn't understand the appeal. At least Dorothea was into other stuff. Some people were talented enough to pull of a variety of musical styles. Spike was not one of them. If he had to sing opera, he'd probably die. "Heavy metal, classic rock, stuff like that," he replied. "Been learning to play a lot of it myself over the years."

“Lucky for you, I know my audience, so you’re spared.” Had Spike been anyone else, she would have taken that as a challenge and immediately went into Defying Gravity. But if she did, the party would be under her voice’s power, and well, she wasn’t about to do any Hocus Pocus nonsense either. Spike’s interest was in the rock category. Unsurprising. But was surprising was that he wrote his own music. It took talent to be a composer, especially on some of the instruments. “What are some of your favorite bands?”

"Yay for me," Spike replied. He could go without showtunes tonight, although the pop music they were playing at this party wasn't much better. He wondered how much if it was played with actual instruments instead of just buttons on a computer. He knew some technology being involved was inevitable, some old bands sounded a lot better with the sound restored and cleaned up a bit. But he felt like that was different. Dorothea asked what bands he listened to and he thought for a moment, trying to narrow it down to a few. "Metallica, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold. And then some old stuff like Black Sabbath and Kiss. 'Old people music' some might call it."
