After the Halloween party, John had drank himself into a stupor. The next morning, he woke with a familiar, throbbing headache. Wearing a pair of sunglasses, he made his way to Speedy's for an early morning greasy breakfast sandwich. Something to pad his alcohol sour stomach. Biting into the cheesy, eggy, sausage biscuit-y sandwich was like bliss. And for a moment, he almost felt like he was himself again.

Considering how crazy parties could get, even ones thrown by the school, Shiro felt like the Halloween one hadn't been too bad. The gym was still in one piece by the end of it all and the students had looked like they were having fun. They'd certainly gone all out with their costumes, and some of the teachers had as well. Shiro had kept it relatively simple, dressing up as Luke Skywalker. he'd even made one of his arms metal so it looked more like Luke's robot hand. With how well things went, and it was his cheat day, he decided to indulge in some good old fashioned greasy stuff. They weren't good for you, but cheesy eggs, bacon, and butter-filled biscuits certainly hit the spot. And it looked like he wasn't the only one with the same idea. John Constantine was digging into something similar, and wearing sunglasses indoors. Shiro could only guess what that meant. "Easy there man, don't make yourself sick," he said.

Chewing Constantine, glanced up, wincing when light snuck past the rim of his glasses. Sobriety was a bitch. No wonder he kept drinking. But to mix things up this morning, he had a plain black undoctored coffee. As a treat. That and he had completely drained his stash dry after the Halloween party. Even confiscating alcohol from underaged drinkers.
"Can’t be arsed right now. This is too good."

"Whatever you say," Shiro said with a shrug. He wasn't about to try and fight on this. Others had tried with John before, and it never worked. "How's your head?" he asked as he sat down across from him. Knowing John, he was probably nursing a massive hangover right now. When Shiro's father drank, it was usually a while before he could stand any loud noises or bright lights.

"No worse off than usual."
He took an overly enthusiastic bite of his potato cake and had to chase it with coffee. He had dealt with plenty of hangovers in his time. A few advil, some water for hydration and enough coffee to drown a small animal, John coped with the pulsing headache that threatened to once again, head back headfirst into the bottle. That would be reserved for later. Once he managed to get his hands on more alcohol. He had little left in his precious flask and he needed that to get him through the day.
"Might as well as sit if you're looking for a chin wag," John sighed. "Looking up at you is giving my neck a crick."

Okay, so this was a typical morning for John. Shiro couldn't imagine him trying to teach in this condition. Maybe he was used to it by now though. He did offer Shiro to sit with him though, so he accepted the offer. "You know, some would advise to treat your body like a temple," he said gently. Not that everyone could achieve a perfect status like that, but it never hurt to try. Even Shiro wouldn't describe himself that way. Sure, he may be fit and healthy, but his father's reputation hung over him like a shadow. His mother worried it was holding him back sometimes.

"Good thing I'm not the religious type."
John didn't see much for temples and churches. The world was far too messed up for that sort of nonsense. As for treating himself better? Well, he had his reasons for drinking. Part of it was to put himself into mind-numbing oblivion. He didn't have to think. He didn't have to feel. It was much better for him that way.
"I don't want a lecture about my health," John cautioned. "I'm too bloody hungover for it."

Shiro gave a little laugh. "Neither am I. But the message is positive." John bristled a little though, thinking he was going to get another lecture. "I save lecturing for my students," Shiro replied. He took a bite of his breakfast sandwich before adding "Just don't...keel over and die or something, okay? We'd hate to have to go through the whole hiring process again."

John relaxed a little. A small smile quirked at the corner of his lips. Okay, he thought, Shiro seemed half decent. And no lecture for him for ruining his liver. A plus in his book if there was one. He got plenty of judgment for his life choices. It was how he coped. Sure, there was therapy, but alcohol was cheaper. With a lot less 'delving into the trauma' or what made him want to drink.
"Ah, no one tells you teaching comes with paperwork."

"Or that superpowers and hormones are more dangerous than you remember," Shiro replied. He swore, kids weren't this crazy when he was a teenager. But didn't all adults think that? Maybe he'd just forgotten what it was like to be a kid. He'd gone through some rough stuff, but that was out of the ordinary. It seemed like every other student that came in had problems going on, ranging from parents divorcing to having mental health issues.

"Ha! Back in my day - actually... no, I shouldn't bring that one up."
Constantine was pretty sure if he started airing those stories, it would be like giving them life once more. Allowing them to replicate themselves. And no one needed that. Especially not with hormones involved. Thankfully, the students hadn't come crying to him because student X broke their heart, and they could no longer be partners in class with student Y. The things that seemed so big back then seem trivial now.

"Hey, I won't tell. I did my fair share of crazy stuff when I was a kid," Shiro said. "The big oak tree on campus, I climbed to the top once trying to impress a girl. Ended up falling out and breaking my hand. People wouldn't let me forget it for months." That had been pretty embarrassing, and he was reminded of it every time he walked past the tree while going about his day. Although from what he'd heard from the students, he wasn't the only person to fall out of it.

"Let's just say, I acted out a wee bit more than trying to impress a girl," John said.
Drugs. Sleeping around. Alcohol. Actually, he might drink more than he did back then. But John was in a band back then. He thought he was the coolest man on the face of the earth. And back then, he thought he knew better than anyone else too. Needless to say, he hadn't been on the straight and narrow path to righteous justice. He became a hero for selfish reasons.

"I can imagine so," Shiro lightly teased. John must have been interesting back when he was younger. Shiro wondered if he had been any different back then. He assumed something had happened to cause his drinking issues. He just didn't know what, and he wasn't about to ask now. "Kind of hard to do that sort of thing anymore," he commented. He blamed work for his lack of a love life, although his mother would always say it was because he was afraid of really being open with someone. Sure, there were always people trying to hook up with superheroes because they wanted to be with somebody famous, but women had quickly learned that Shiro wasn't looking for something like that.

"Do what? Act out or impress girls?" John asked.
John's drinking was considered 'acting out' when really, it was his way of coping with things. As for taking someone out on a date? John was king of one-night stands. He wasn't exactly relationship material. Friendship. Romantic like. Family connections. None of them worked out in the end. He was better off on his own. The only person he could truly count on was himself.
