"Okay, kiosks it is," Spike agreed. There was sure to be some interesting trinkets and oddities for sale. And at least it easier to get a souvenir that way rather than try endlessly at a game. He ran a hand through his hair one more time before heading off in what he figured was their direction. Whatever that moment had been earlier when he'd stopped and took a second look at Dorothea had passed and he just wanted to keep things light. That was how Spike liked to be, just go with the flow and try not to think about things too seriously.

Dorothea did one last fluff of hair before stepping towards the peaked roofs of the kiosks. As much as she would have liked to see Spike try a hand at the classic carnie games, his distaste for them was obvious. She wasn’t about to pressure a friend into doing something he didn’t want to. The faintest glimmer was in the word friend though. Did she seriously want Spike to be a bit more than a friend? Not like she hadn’t had that thought about men she found attractive before. Dorothea blinked the edging thought away. “You know, Spike,” she spoke just to cut through the silence like butter. “You never told me your superpower. Care to share?”

There was a moment of quiet before Dorothea decided to ask Spike about his powers. His brow furrowed for a moment. How did that not come up in conversation before? Well, better late than never. "They're called 'preflexes.; Got 'em from my mom," he replied. "I guess the best way to put 'em is sensing what's about to happen before it actually does. Like the Terror Tower." He pointed up at the ride, which was cranking up again. "I can sense when the ride's about to drop right before the ride guy pulls the lever. Comes handy in a fight. It doesn't sense everything about to happen, but it's pretty close once you really focus on it." Of course, some things were just too fast for him to sense, like when Ruby was going full speed. And forget sensing anything if he was drunk or high. Preflexes were pretty much muted when he was like that.

Preflexes? Such an interesting name for a power. Dorothea had never heard of such a power. As Spike described it, she listened with curiosity. It sounded pretty helpful. Knowing what your enemy was going to do did make for effective strategizing. “Remind me to never watch a movie with you, then. You’ll know the entire thing!” Dorothea teased. The family topic was mild, but the da t he was willing to share a small bit inspired her. “I got my siren voice from my father. But after he and my mom divorced, I…never saw him again.”

spike snickered at Dorothea's joke. "Not if I'd had a couple of drinks or a smoke at that point," he replied. Although being able to sense when something was about to blow up or when a jump scare was about to happen in a movie did sound kind of funny. Dorothea mentioned her parents too, about how she got her powers from her dad. But it sounded like he wasn't in the picture anymore. "Ouch. That sucks," he commented, which unfortunately was his usual response when someone revealed something personal. He still cared, heart-to-hearts just weren't his strong point, especially when it came to being vulnerable himself.

Dorothea chuckled at Spike’s quip. Well, it was good to know that preflexes didn’t fall under movies. As he addressed sympathy for her situation, he was taken aback. That rush of what she had felt earlier was back as he let himself be vulnerable. They never really talked about heavier topics before. She felt honored that he would even trust her enough to let it down

Even if Spike had put it bluntly, Dorothea still seemed to appreciate his sympathy. Divorced parents probably weren't easy to deal with. It felt like half the kids at Hero High were dealing with that kind of problem. "But I guess even parents that are still together can have their own set of problems," he continued, just thinking out loud. "They stay together even though they shouldn't. Or their parenting skills are sorely lacking." Spike's own parents were like that. They still cared about each other, but just put too much pressure on Spike until he cracked. Now, their main response to his trauma was to ignore it as much as possible, which had unfortunately become his main coping mechanism as well.

Dorothea could only nod solemnly to Spike's musings. Yes, not every one had divorced parents like hers. The thing was Nancy had rebounded after she and "Prince Charming" broke uo. Prince Charming her foot. What kind of Prince Charming abandons his daughter abandons his daughter because she seemingly doesn't have a superpower. "My mom and I have a healthy relationship at least. She sends care packages whenever she can." She chuckled. "I might have to give you some of the treats she sends."

At least Dorothea had one parent that cared. Spike's parents weren't the overly emotional type. They could be affectionate, they just didn't get mushy about it. And Spike learned early on that pleasing them was the best way to get on their good side. Dorothea's mom sounded like she was more open. "Can't resist some good old fashioned junk food every once in a while," he joked. Maybe he'd get another snack if he and Dorothea were still at the pier, but right now, all around them were kiosks with vendors selling little trinkets and doo-dads. Spike perused casually. It wasn't like he was itching to buy something, but there certainly was a variety of stuff for sale, from hand-made jewelry to T-shirts with colorful designs to keychains in every shape and size.

“She’s good about sending the stuff you need, too.” There was something about having a mom that always got more than enough of one small thing. Nancy had sent Dorothea a huge pack of batteries for the curtain lights she bought to commentate her new roommate Bella. She fiddled with a small pendant on the table made from frosted sea glass. Something about it spoke to her. Maybe because it was green like her eyes. The price wasn’t bad either. Smiling, she made the purchase.

"She sounds nice," Spike commented. Even if Dorothea's dad was a jerk, at least she got lucky with her mom. Better to have one parent that cared than two that didn't. It looked like the jewelry was enough to catch Dorothea's eye and she bought necklace that matched her eyes. Without even really thinking about it, he complimented "Nice. It looks good on you."

“Oh, thank you,” Dorothea said with a small blush hitting her cheeks. This was both to Spike’s flattery and the way he described her mom. She played with the sea glass idly, looking around at the other kitchy ships. Nothing struck her fancy or worth wasting time, so she looked at Spike. “Is there anything you want to do? Only fair I let you have a shot.”

Wait, was Dorthea blushing? Nah, Spike shook the thought away. It was warm outside, despite the sun already setting. Dorothea asked if he wanted to do anything and he thought for a moment. Rides and carnival food were already checked off on his list of things to do. He glanced at the jewelry stand Dorothea had gotten her necklace from, seeing that the jewelry was made from shells, rocks, and all sorts of things that washed up on the beach. "I think a souvenir will wrap things up nicely," he replied, picking out a necklace with a shark tooth on it. "Does it make me look cool?" he joked with a grin.

“Cooler than you already were before,” Dorothea responded with a wink. The shark tooth necklace that Spike wore wasn’t anything new. Countless people from supposed surfer pros to people claiming they took expensive beach vacations usually had one. But on Spike, the larger tooth looked surprisingly chic without looking tacky. From far away, it looked like a big blade.

Spike found himself smiling brightly after Dorothea winked at him. He didn't know exactly why his view of her had changed, but the feelings were nice at least, and he wanted to enjoy anything that made him feel good. He felt like it was the only way to balance out all the crappy stuff in his life. Too many things were complicated or created a hassle or sent him over the edge. Dorothea was nice and easy going, and that stability made him feel more relaxed than he'd been in a long time.
((Want to wrap things up here?))
