Everyone else might have moved on from Spike's little mishap at the beach a while back, but it was still lingering in his mind. He still felt his gut twist anytime he remembered how pathetic he'd acted. And he'd noticed kids he usually partied with avoiding him for a week or two. They'd moved on from it at this point and things were pretty much back to status quo, but that didn't mean he'd gotten over it. So when he heard about a carnival near the beach, he'd intended to give it a wide berth. But, after hearing Dorothea get excited about it, he started to have second thoughts. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad. It wasn't like it was right on the water or anything, it was on the boardwalk a good distance aways from the ocean. And he felt like he needed to make it up to Dorothea after freaking out during their last outing. So, he'd agreed to meet her there. His leg anxiously bounced up and down though as he waited by the entrance and he fished around his pocket for a cigarette, hoping it would relax him a little.

After a choreography session went long, Dorothea made a bee line to the beach. School, music for the glee club, and even her community theatre volunteering for, well, pretty much everything, had her yearning for social activity outside the black box. Spike had asked about spring carnival. Of course, she was happy about it and eager to go. The last time she was here, she was with…Ferdie. Oh, sweet Ferdinand. But old flames weren’t about to rain on her parade. Dorothea adjusted the tie on her sarong and looked up, blinking at one person close by, smoking a cigarette.
“Spike!” Dorothea waved over to him. It was a pleasant surprise. Last time, Spike had somehow been yeeted off the dock and she dove in to save his life. How had he been? And he had been disinterested about it last they spoke.

((Okay, describing Spike as getting "yeeted" off the dock made me snicker so hard. XD))
Spike had just lit his cigarette and blown out a small cloud of smoke when he heard Dorothea call his name. She seemed her usual chipper, stylish self. But her smile was a welcoming sight. He felt like she was one of the few people around here that was genuinely nice, not just fake nice because it was the polite way to be. "Hey," he greeted, smiling as little as he walked over to meet her. He probably looked more on the plain side standing next to her, but he had opted for comfort rather than whatever summer fashion was going on. His favorite grey T shirt and pair of jeans had never let him down before.

Dorothea managed a sincere smile as he approached. Whenever Spike had that little shadow of a smile, it added a bit of light to his usual brooder look. It was rare that she saw it. Then again, she didn’t recognize people without their costumes in the theatre world. Almost like people had lives or something. “And here I thought you weren’t coming,” she teased

"What, and miss all the rigged games and rides that might not have passed safety inspections?" Spike joked. Not that that would stop the crowd from trying them anyway. The carnival was only here for a few weekends out of the year and people wanted to suck in the atmosphere while they could.

Dorothea folded her arms with a side eye. “And how do you know they’re rigged? Unless you’re the one that did the trick in the first place.” He had left out the other cliches of carnivals like the deep fried foods. The smell of dough hitting hot canola oil was making her stomach hit the low bass notes. She was looking forward to a sweet treat or a fattening treat all day. Exercise did make people hungry, too, after all.

"Come on, if they were fair, all of the prizes would be gone in a day," Spike replied. Not that they were totally amazing or anything. You could probably buy any of them at a local toy store without the stress of tossing a ring onto a bottle neck or shooting a target. He heard Dorothea's stomach growl though and he figured some food was in order. "Let's find some grub before we start hitting up rides," he offered, putting out his cigarette before heading into the carnival grounds.

“Last time I was here, my date won me something with little to no effort,” she argued, folding her arms. It had been a large effort, but hey, Ferdie was rich. He had spent enough to try the balloon popping. After ten attempts, yes she counted, he had walked up to her with the small dog stuffie. After their inevitable breakup, Dorothea had given it away to a child in the theatre camp she was volunteering at. Spike suggested they get food, and she nodded. “So, what are you in the mood for?”

"He must have been one of the lucky ones," Soike commented, although maybe Dorothea's date had been the smooth type to actually get something. Some people had a knack for these things. Maybe Spike could win anything involving shooting at a target, but that was about it. And that was only because he'd dabbled into a few weapons over his high school years. Dorothea changed the subject back to food though and Spike looked around for a moment before spotting something that caught his eye. "I think the pretzel stand is calling my name," he answered. Something hot but not too filling was probably best before stepping foot on any rides.

Dorothea hummed happily when Spike brought up pretzels. Good choice. It would be filling but not to the point where, if they did decide to try out any of the rickety rides, it wouldn’t turn to mush. Besides, she had to get her sweet cravings in. A cinnamon covered pretzel would do the trick for that. “A pretzel sounds amazing,” she agreed.

Spike felt satisfied that Dorothea was happy with the pretzel idea. He made his way over to the stand, which luckily didn't have a line at the moment. "Two please," he said as he pulled out his wallet. "One with extra salt and..." He turned back to Dorothea. "Did you want anything on yours?" It looked like they had quite the number of options: cinnamon and sugar, mustard, cheese. This stand was loaded.

Dorothea tapped her lip thoughtfully as she scanned the topping option. Mustard was good, but not exactly hitting her cravings. Cinnamon needed something else, otherwise she would accidentally take part in the viral cinnamon challenge. She could see the headlines as a joke article, “Can I get mine topped with cinnamon sugar, please?” There was no need for the siren song or a flirty eyelash flutter. It was just an order, nothing more.

The pretzels came out in a flash after they were paid for, and Spike had to admit, they were pretty good. "Ooo, that hits the spot," he said after taking a big bite. Big grains of salt covered very inch of his pretzel, but he liked it that way. "Got to hand it to carnival people, they know how to make good food," he added. Of course, it wasn't healthy in the slightest, but people didn't come to a carnival to get vitamins and minerals. "So, what's been happening in your life?" he asked Dorothea.

The sinful smell of yeasty pretzels hit Dorothea’s noise. Topped with cinnamon, and it became an incredibly yummy treat. She sniffed once a took a very unladylike chomp. Spike asked how she was, and she chased her bite down from her water bottle. “Busy. Tired. If I have to make one more mambo note, I’m going to pass out.” She exhaled, relieved at getting that weight off her chest. “How about you?”

Busy and tired didn't sound too unusual. Spike knew Dorothea was a lot more social than he was. Not that Spike would pass up an opportunity to hang out with friends or go to a party, if he was in the mood, but he preferred to stay on the sidelines during those times. He only liked being in the spotlight if his band was performing, which he could actually give an update on. "Good, I think my band's finally agreed on a new song list after going through the same ones for so long," he replied. "We should be performing them at the Crow Bar soon."
