"O-Oh, well, it's not a bad thing," Namine said. "Plants are amazing! Did you know that there's a wild fig tree in South Africa with roots that go 400 feet deep?"
Namine had lots of free time when adopted by her uncle. Reading books was one of her few escapes that didn't require constant drawing. Because her uncle wanted her drawings as realistic as possible, she was mostly only allowed books of the nonfiction variety. Meaning the educational ones. Which was fine. She liked learning new things, but she secretly really liked romantic novels. As fictional and cheesy as they were, they were enjoyable. And the trashier the better.

"Whoa. That's a lot of roots," Bella said in amazement. Imagine what you could do with all that. Bella knew one of her weaknesses was being depending on having plants around her, but if there were enough, she could pull off some nifty things if she focused hard enough. "I love the tall trees in Redwood National Park, over in California. The tallest one there is over 350 feet." She'd love to see in person one day. The idea of standing next to something that tall sounded amazing.

"I've never been," Namine said.
There was a wistful note of longing in her voice. She wanted to travel. To see new places. It was why when she heard that there was a beach nearby, she made sure it was one of her first stops after getting settled into the dorms with her roommate. She had been cooped up in a house for far too long that she practically looked like a little ghost next to Bella in her bright beauty. Though, she probably looked like a ghost of a person to most anyone who met her. Bland. Colorless. Muted.

"Me neither, but it's on my bucket list," Bella said. "Are there any places you really want to go?" The answer to that question was always different depending on who you asked, and Bella felt like it could tell a lot about a person. Some people wanted to visit tropical islands and crystal-blue waters. Others like century-old cities that were rich with history. Or rainforests that had different animals every way you looked.

"An atlas' worth of places and not enough time in the world," Namine said.
She wanted to see the places she had drawn pictures of. But she was afraid to do it. All sorts of things could go wrong in travel. And she would be alone. She was also afraid of being overcome by her powers, forced to draw something and be caught unaware as something bad happened.

Wow. That sounded like a lot. Had Namine done much traveling before? You couldn't really tell jut by looking at a person. But it seemed to matter to Namine a lot. "I bet you'll see them all someday," Bella said encouragingly. "Superheroes travel all the time. We're not the only city where supervillains and giant robots like to run amok." Sure, maybe Metroville had a lot more action going on than others, but it wasn't like it was the only place where this sort of thing happened.

Namine's smile was thin. She didn't think she was going to be one of those traveling super heroes. Not when her powers required her to be stagnant for long periods of time, drawing her visions out. Lying about where she needed to go because she 'had a vision' seemed like poor taste considering her uncle's history.
"I hope so," Namine said instead.

Namine seemed a little hesitant before replying. Was Bella missing something? But before she could ask, she glanced at the time and realized that it was getting late. If she wanted to do anything else near the beach, she needed to get a move on before catching a bus back to school. "Hey, I need to get going, but maybe we'll see each other around campus?" she offered. Namine seemed really nice, and a lover of quiet things. Bella needed more people like that in her life.

"Yeah, of course," Namine said, "Don't let me keep you."
She smiled. It had been nice to talk to someone outside of her roommate, but keeping the secret of what her drawings did, wasn't exactly easy and she had a feeling once classes started in full steam, she wouldn't be able to hide it anymore. The teachers would probably announce who had what powers... She didn't want to think about it.
"Take care. Try not to lose your hat anymore."

"Right, right," Bella laughed, her hand reflexively reaching up to pat it down a little firmer onto her head. God forbid the wind blew it away again. She doubted she would be lucky enough to bump into another nice person if it happened a second time. "See ya," she said, waving with her free hand before hurrying off.
