“Easy there, Red. There’s a time and place for seriousness. Do they beat you over the head with it, sure, but it’s to prepare when the heavy stuff does come crashing in. Some times literally.”
Like those Cinderblocks. They had cone right the heck out of nowhere. No one had gotten killed, thankfully, but Riku did some times wonder. What could have happened if he, Utena, Bella, Caspar, and Maria hadn’t stepped up? There could have been tons of casualities. He tried to push that image away, but it came out as a small clawed hand…of rather two hands…that made the shape of a flying bat. He saw it out of the corner of his eye and didn’t think much of it. The shadows were like kids seeking attention; ignore and the behavior will stop.

"Tell that to the teachers. Thank goodness they even let us have a party!" she said.
She was pretty sure they were being handled with kid gloves. Despite the fact that the students were the ones who fought the Cinderblocks. They were already proving that they were made of tough stuff. Or at least, she liked to believe so. She hadn't met all the students as of yet. But she was working on it. Slowly but surely. She waved her hand, as if to push aside the dark cloud.
"Are you having fun?"

“I led a line dance and uncannily ran into a Red Riding Hood. I’m doing great.”
But as he said that, a strange tangle began forming in his chest. Hanging out with so many shadows in a dark room was starting to make his powers restless. Maybe it was from working too hard on the dance floor? He usually had these shadow murmurs whenever the sports arena lights dimmed and he had been in a massive play. His tongue started to feel dry, and he connected with dehydration. It’d help keep the darkness at bay.
“Though I m starting to get thirsty.”

"Want to go grab some punch?" Ruby asked.
She glanced over her shoulder. There was a punch bowl not far away. Supervised of course. The teachers were eyeing it carefully to make sure no funny business happened. No one wanted spiked punch after all. Plus, there were minors there as part of a junior program. She could probably use something to nibble on too. Maybe they had some finger foods.

“Sure. Nothing like water flavored with sugar, fruit flavors and more sugar to keep us on our toes.”
At least it wasn’t the gross energy drinks that tasted like cough medicine. That one sip still haunted him when a teammate had given him one to try. And then there were the inevitable sugar crash hangovers. As he and Ruby headed to the bar, he saw there were two options; fruit punch and a thick creamy chocolate that smelled like cinnamon. Must have been the hot chocolate that Senor Hueros was chatting about excitedly.

Ruby helped herself to a hot chocolate, completely forgoing punch. She paused to take a deep inhale of the chocolatey cinnamon-y aroma before sighing happily. Even holding the cup seemed to warm her up. And the taste was exquisite. Sort of like having something that reminded her of comfort and home. Funny how that could be fit into a cup.
"My mom used to make hot chocolate for us when we were kids." Ruby said.

Riku just smiled in response. Parents. Must have been nice to have at least one figure who helped bring you into the works. Maybe not biologically, but all the same. All he knew were volunteers at the orphanage and occasional food trucks. Hot chocolate from them was powder and water. This stuff was nothing like the chocolate magma he was used to.

"She was a superhero too!" Ruby enthused. "Actually, she graduated from here! It's why I wanted to come to school here. I've got super speed. What about you?"
She smiled so brightly at Riku that one might compare her to the sun itself. She liked learning about new people. Riku was new enough to try to wiggle some new information out of him. Plus, she was a naturally curious little beastie. Her mother had said so when she was growing up. A healthy dose of curiosity, she had said.

The smile Riku gave was cool but genuine. It wasn’t too often that he heard of superheroes settling down and having kids, and those kids wanted to follow in their footsteps. Whoever Ruby’s mom was, she definitely left her mark in a good way. He didn’t have that. His mark was one of shadows. One that left a gross taste in his mouth and a put in his stomach. So when Ruby asked about his excursions, he said. I don’t think we’re quite ready to get into that part of the story. Not yet anyways.” After looking at her puppy dog eyes once more though, he figured a little wouldn’t hurt. “I guess I wanted to make a difference, show that dark powers didn’t always equal evil.”

"Elemental powers are so cool! My sister is a hero too. She has fire powers and she's amazing! Lots of people think fire is too dangerous but it's all about how you use it. Any power can be a good power if you use it the right way."
Ruby liked to believe that anyone could use their powers for good if they wanted to. Or that the same powers could be manipulated for evil. She was just glad that Riku made the choice to come to school to make a difference. To do some good in the world. But she didn't want him to feel as if he were a danger just because he had dark powers.

"Thanksgiving at your place must never be boring then, and you've got the jobs all settled for the setup. Sis cooks, you and Mom run out for last minute groceries, easy peasy."
Hard to snap when fake wolf paws, but hey, at least Riku made his point enough. There was such a cozy feeling with that image, just as cozy as the hot chocolate. With the added bonus of the spice he hadn't expected, Not jalapeno bad but also not bell pepper bland. He'd have to ask Professor Hueros for the recipe at the end of the night.

Ruby winced. "Uh, well, mom used to do that. Not anymore. She was a hero and... well, it's a dangerous occupation."
She didn't want to have to explain that her mom had been Summer Rose. How she had died fighting against a super villain that Ruby had never even heard of but was apparently super dangerous. Like... SSS rank dangerous. The villain was apparently a very big deal. Just as her mom had been a very important hero back in the day.
"It's usually just me, my sister, my dad and my uncle. It's cozy."

“Oh….Oh.”
All of the sudden, Riku felt bad. Ruby didn’t need to say anymore and he felt like a douche. He didn’t know his parents. All he knew was he was dumped on the doorstep of an orphanage. The only family that he knew of was his uncle. If Dante even was his uncle by blood. Riku was too lazy to do the research. All that mattered was an adult that wasn’t grossly obsessed with his shadow powers was an upgrade. Ruby still had family, and she said it was cozy.

"Oh it's... well, it is like that but I'm not sad about it. We had lots of good memories." Ruby assured him.
She rubbed the back of her neck. Well, that's not awkward at all. She had gone and put her foot in her mouth by being a bit too open and honest. She simply saw no point in hiding that sort of stuff. Anyone who was everyone knew who Summer Rose was. And how she had died in the line of duty. She had been a big name hero back in the day.
"Is your drink okay?" she asked, hoping to change the topic.

“Yeah. Nicer than the party punch. Getting some major deja food just looking at the bowl.”
Not that there was anything bad with punch. But every school event had the same boring bowl with the same boring artificial fruit flavor and the sane boring color. The hot chocolate was a nicer change of pace. Also, it was dark like his powers, and the season of gloom always made him feel stronger.
