Ruby knew that you weren't supposed to use your powers in school unless it was for a class. She also knew that running in the hallways was bad. But as she streaked down the empty halls with rose petals in her wake that slowly drifted out of existence shortly thereafter, she couldn't help enjoy the freedom of it. That was until she ran smack into someone and was sent bouncing back and crashing to the floor. Immediately, she sat back up, eyes wide.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" she cried. "Are you okay?"

There was always a bit of hustle and bustle in the hallways if the bell was about to ring, but Spike liked to take his sweet time. Usually the only time he rushed was if he was running late to a band gig. His mind was already on his next one, thinking if maybe his band should delve into ore classic rock next time. Old school stuff like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin were some of his favorites. His thoughts were interrupted when something hard smacked into his back. He managed to stay on his feet, but he whirled around, going "What the hell?" He half expected it to be some beefy kid that was trying to sucker punch him, but he only saw a girl that was considerably shorter than him. She apologized profusely, but Spike just looked over her head, wondering if it had been somebody else. But nope, she was the only person behind him. "That was you?" he asked, surprised that she packed that much of a punch.

"Uh... yeah? It was an accident," she assured him.
She was worried that he would flip out on her for running. She knew she wasn't supposed to. Time and time again her family lectured her on being aware of her surroundings when using her powers. And thankfully, the rose petals drifted away, leaving no trace. But the guy was staring at her in sheer disbelief and she wasn't sure if she should be offended by that or not.
"You aren't hurt, are you?"

"No, no, just...surprised I didn't see you coming," Spike commented. He hadn't sensed her at all, not even a few seconds before she'd run into him. She must have been going fast, that was the main reason he wasn't able to sense some things before they happened. "How fast were you going?" he asked, curious. Maybe she was one of those kids who could run faster than the speed of light or something, or teleport. Spike had seen both over the years, and more. With both of his parents being superheroes, he'd pretty much been around them all his life, and had seen a lot.

"Uh... Not sure?" Ruby offered a sheepish smile. "I've never clocked myself before."
To her, things never felt fast. It was just going from one place to the next. As natural as breathing. She had a feeling that the blonde kid named Albedo in her elemental class would have been interested in 'testing' that. And she supposed it wouldn't be too bad to find out. She shook her head so that she could focus. The guy was unharmed despite being knocked clean off his feet.
"My name's Ruby! What's yours?"

"Might be interesting to find out," Spike commented, more to himself than the girl. If something was interesting enough to get him curious and distract him from other things, he liked to follow it as long as possible. Most recently, he'd been trying to build a pyramid of beer cans with a couple of party goers, seeing how tall they could get it before it fell. They hadn't gotten very far, either because people kept bumping into it or someone knocked it down by placing down a can with an unsteady hand, but it had kept hem entertained for a couple of hours. The girl introduced herself as Ruby and asked him his name and he replied with "Spike." He glanced up at a clock in the hallway. The bell was going to ring in a few minutes, but he might as well keep the conversation going. Running late was kind of expected of him nowadays anyway. "Where are you headed?" he asked, lacing his hands behind his head.

"I was going to go to the comic shop! They're having a sale. Buy two, get one free!"
It was a silly reason to run now, but she had been so excited. She saved up (not a lot since the last time she had been out) but enough to take part in the deal. Especially since some of her favorite comics had released new issues. She rubbed the back of her neck, avoiding looking at him out of the embarrassment. She wasn't sure how she would go about making it up to him for knocking him down, but she would try, at least.
"Where were you heading?"

Comic books huh? Well, that could be a legit reason to get excited. Spike had seen the book store get pretty crowded sometimes if something popular was getting released. Usually the most reading he did was sheet music when trying to learn a new song. "Speedy's Fast Food. Cafeteria stuff isn't cutting it for me right now," he replied. School lunch could get kind bland sometimes. Sure, Speedy's stuff wasn't healthy for you in the slightest, but it tasted better.

"Oh, that sounds amazing," Ruby said.
She paused to think it over. She didn't have enough allowance for both, which was heartbreaking, but motivation for her to get that part time job she needed for pocket money. Then again, the cafeteria wasn't terrible, considering she went from her dad's cooking. Though, that didn't say much for her father's culinary skills. He was a single parent. He did his best. Certainly it was better than anything she could make.
"Mind if I walk with you?" she asked.

Spike glanced down at Ruby. She wasn't usually the type of person he hung out with, although he did tend to float from group to group depending on who needed something from him. But she seemed interesting, and was nicer than some of the other kids that ran around this school. Might as well kill some time on the way to Speedy's. "Sure, why not?" he said with a little shrug. That was how he tended to be, going with the flow and not minding too much if things changed.

"Great! Let's go!" she said.
She eagerly began to step alongside him, practically skipping in her step, heading out of school. She offered him a bright and cheery smile. She was always up for getting to know new people. And this guy was as new as they came. She hadn't seen him before. So therefore, she was now resolved to get to know as much about him as he would allow.

Ruby set off at a brisk pace while Spike walked along a little more leisurely. "Comic books sure seem to put a pep in your step," he commented. Of course, everyone had their passions around here. Some liked art or sports or video games. Spike liked music, even though he tended to lean towards the older, harder stuff and describe modern music as dull and boring.

"Yeah, well, I don't like to let things keep me down."
She shrugged. She had a good day. While her classes might not have gone as well as she hoped, she was making the most of the day. And it was mostly her fault because she loathed studying. Self-inflicted studying suffering. Oh well, she would buckle down and study harder for the next test. At least she was telling herself that.

"So you look at the glass half full," Spike observed. He wasn't sure if he could be lumped into either category. If anything, his glass had no water in it at all. He didn't really hope the best for the future, or dread it. He just preferred not to think about it at all. Maybe he'd become a superhero, maybe he wouldn't. Maybe he'd graduate, maybe he'd finally take it one step too far and get kicked out, no matter what his parents did. Whatever was meant to be would be.

"I think the glass is just a glass and the contents are what we make of it," Ruby declared. "You can always fill it up if you don't like it. Or change what you're drinking."
She smiled at him. She never understood the need to determine things as half full or half empty. They were what they were, glasses with liquids. She preferred milk to water. Or better yet, coffee with lots and lots of sugar. Then again, she would get teased and called a kid for it, so she kept that to herself. She knew that most badass scythe wielding heroes didn't drink milk.
