"Are you sure you're getting enough oxygen up there?" she retorted. "You seem to be hallucinating!"
Height wasn't exactly something Ruby had considered in dating. Mostly, it was their personality. If they got along or not. If they respected the same things she did. Like helping others. And that cookies were sacred to her to the point in which if her significant other tried to take them from her, it was war. Right then and there.

"Maybe if I was one of those kids that can fly, that would be a more recurring problem," Spike said with a laugh. "I just have quick reflexes though, quicker than most. At least, if someone's not faster than me, which you seem to be." Although Spike's power also sometimes didn't work if he wasn't paying attention, which he definitely hadn't been at the time when Ruby had come down the hallway full speed.

"What is your power?" Ruby asked. Then, realizing that was as rude as a pirate with a broken peg-leg, she added, "If it's okay I ask?"
She winced at her own big mouth. Sometimes, powers were sensitive things and people did not like to talk about it. She hadn't met anyone who personally didn't like talking about it, but her sister cautioned that powers were sensitive things for some folks and to mind her manners. Don't butt in and be rude about it. Or so she had been cautioned.

"Sure," Spike replied with a shrug. "My mom calls them 'preflexes.' I got them from her. If I'm in a fight, I can sense a lot of attacks before they happen. I guess almost like predicting the future, but on a really small scale." He gave a little laugh. "Not too handy in any other situation though. I can't predict lottery numbers or anything, although that would be pretty cool." Really, outside of a fight, Spike might as well not have powers at all. Of course, his mom didn't see it that way. She was one of the best superheroes out there, using her powers to enhance her hand-to-hand combat as well as her weapon skills. She could almost rival his dad, and the two together made a force to be reckoned with.

"Then..." she said slowly. "How come you didn't 'preflex' me bumping into you?"
Her grin was unrepentant mischief. Even recognizing something is coming, doesn't mean you can react fast enough. She was just trying to ruffle his feathers since he seemed to think it was so funny to tease her about her shortness. She felt at ease, relaxed for the first time in a while since this was exactly like the sparring matches she and her sister used to get into. It reminded her of home, in a way she hadn't realized she had missed so much.

Spike could see Ruby's little coy grin. Looked like it was payback time for calling her short. He sighed, although he still smiled. "I guess you just happened to be faster," he replied. "Although don't be too surprised, small and fast tend to go hand in hand." The opposite tended to be true as well, with slower guys tending to be bigger, although they were usually usually stronger.

“Good. It means I can kick your butt if you don’t see me coming!” She cajoled.
A grin spread across her face. She stuck her tongue out for good measure and to show she meant nothing by it. Just good natured ribbing. She had a feeling that he could handle it since he was able to dish it back out to her.

"Is that a challenge I hear?" Spike asked. "Maybe I'll have to keep an eye out for you during hand-to-hand combat class and we can settle the score." Being a superhero may have been something his parents forced on him since day one, but he didn't mind the combat so much and he knew he was pretty good at it. The only problem was when he couldn't fight his way out of situation. That could really make him panic if he got scared enough.

"You're on! Loser buys milkshakes!" she declared.
She stuck out her hand so they could shake on this 'deal' of theirs. She couldn't help it. She used to do the same thing with her sister all the time. Granted, the prize wasn't always milkshakes. Sometimes it was doing each others chores. Or taking the blame for accidentally breaking something. Or the one time where they had to decide who took care of their uncle when he was hungover.

Milkshakes? Sounded juvenile, but Spike was down for it. Maybe he could sneak some booze in when Ruby wasn't looking. Either way, at least this was something he had to look forward to. He didn't come across those nearly as often as he liked. "Okay, deal," he said, shaking her hand. Some other guys might scoff at the idea of him taking this seriously, or even entertaining the idea, but Spike wasn't the sort of person who went into a fight because he knew he would win for sure and make himself look good. Sometimes he won, sometimes he didn't. The challenge was what made it interesting to him.

"Try not to cry when I beat you up!" she said. "I won't even use my scythe!"
Her precious precious scythe. Sadly, carrying a weapon on campus seemed to get her in trouble, so it was relegated to her room. She stepped back, rocking on her feet to contain her excitement. Her first sparring match against another student! She could see where she stood amongst the ranks of the up and coming heroes. How exciting!
"I won't even tell anyone at your concert if you do!"

"A scythe, huh? I might have to see that, it's probably as big as you," Spike said. Although if Ruby was as good at it as she said she was, Spike would honestly be impressed. A scythe wasn't like a sword or a bow and arrow. It was big and awkward to handle if you had no idea what you were doing. He hadn't seen too many superheroes have one, if they went for traditional weapons at all. Spike preferred guns himself. They were easy to carry and the basics weren't too hard to learn. Nearly every kid here graduated at least knowing how to shoot one. Whether they went any further with it was up to them.

"My uncle helped me build it!" she enthused. "It's got a plethora of surprises."
Like how it could turn into a gun. But why give up all her surprises? She would of course, use blanks when fighting another student. Her uncle had drilled gun safety into her head since she was a little girl. Do not - under any circumstance - use live rounds on people who weren't actively trying to harm her or someone else.

"What, does it actually cut grass like a regular scythe?" Spike joked. That would be hilarious. Although given Ruby's excitement, it probably did something crazy. If kids around here liked weapons, they could come up with interesting stuff once they tinkered with them a bit. Heck, some even liked it more than the superhero work itself, and focused solely on designing weapons for other heroes to use. It wasn't a bad career path to go down. Spike didn't feel like he'd be too good at it though. He was better at using a gun than building one.

"It cuts more than grass!" she retorted.
She gave him a playful nudge. Her baby was so sharp it could cut through some pretty dense materials. She had never tried her scythe on people and nor did she intend to. She knew that it was a sharp and deadly weapon. It wouldn't take much to hurt someone. She had been taught weapon responsibility. Her uncle was a big safety guy.
