Bored, Albedo sat at one of the tables, picking at some of the snacks he had pilfered from the snack table. He had cracked open a tome on mechanical engineering. He was already working on his next invention. This time, deciding to try to create a portable pocket space heater in mass. The seasons were getting colder. He had a comfortable nest egg from his ice cream machine, which he had sold to Speedy's for a delicious profit (and all the free ice cream he could ever want) since his machine saved the company loads of money on its self-cleaning properties.

Namine was talking to someone, and Zelda didn’t want to feel like a hoverer, so she backed off. She felt out of place in this borrowed costume. With some modifications done with approval. The pale blue ballgown, complete with soft glittery tulle cap sleeves, was aglow. Literally. With LED lights that Zelda had meticulously strung through and she could adjust the features with a hidden button. Her blonde hair was pulled up into a simple French twist. She wandered around when she spied a familiar face. “Albedo?”

Albedo reluctantly lifted his gaze from his book.
"Zelda," he replied. "You look... nice?"
He wasn't lying when he said it. He had manners enough to know she put effort into her appearance, even if he himself had not. He stood out in stark contrast with a 'this is my Halloween costume' shirt he had bought last minute. He bookmarked his page and closed the book, fully prepared to give her his undivided attention since he respected her enough to do so.

Zelda’s cheeks grew warm. The only other two that had given her compliments were Namine and their next door neighbor Dorothea, who had been kind enough to loan the Cinderella ball gown. All that were missing were glass slippers. But rather than murder her feet in death trap heels, she had sufficed with simple flats.
“Thank you.”
Albedo had been absorbed in a book prior to seeing her, and the darkness sucked out all indication of a clue from the cover. Several students were dancing, others mingling, but she wasn’t ready to do either just yet.
“What are you reading?”

"A mechanical engineering book," Albedo said, showing her the cover. "I'm trying to make a portable space heater for winter."
He knew she would appreciate the genius behind his invention. Plenty of students would love to have their own bubbles of warmth. Especially as things got chilly. Not only that but a local homeless population could also benefit from this new device of his. The matter was just finding a way to cheaply mass produce it without having a negative impact on the environment. Or making any barriers to obtaining one.

“I see. And what exactly were you trying to engineer?”
Portable heaters were a dime a dozen. There were multiple variations. Plug in, a simple push of a button, and even eco friendly alternatives were making the rounds. Yet, time after time, Albedo had proven her wrong. His ice cream machine was the stuff of legends amongst the students in the dorms, but with the colder weather, she could understand the appeal of ice cream becoming out of season.

"Mostly the convenience of not having to charge it or plug it in. Pocket sized and portable." Albedo said.
He liked talking with her. She understood the need for his inventions. That there was a use for what he had. Yes, there were other personal heaters, but he was trying to fill a need, same as with the ice cream machines, mostly to see if he could.
"Personal space heaters that you plug in are a fire hazard if left unattended. So... avoiding that too."

“Pocket sized?”
She sat down next to him, careful to not accidentally make the skirt explode into her face. The only pocket sized heater that she knew of were ones that charged with phone cables with a charger that lasted for about a week. Albedo was probably looking for alternative sources of heat. All she could think of was a reaction between different metals to conduct heat, like computer chips.
“It is ambitious. The trick is figuring out venting out unused heat.”

"And not burning out the motor."
He had a few failed attempts, hence his researching the topic more. Was a battery operated by kinetic energy possible? One that recharged as you walked. He had seen other fledgling devices like that. Of course those were patented, just like his new self cleaning ice cream machine. No one else could make it. He would have to reverse engineer what they had done, to make it his own and make it so different no one could say that he copied their work. Or take him to task for it.
"I want to get this out before weather gets to cold."

“Well supply and demand is a factor if we want to get it out in time.”
Suddenly, as Zelda looked over at the jack o lantern LED lighting the table, she was struck with inspiration. Fire was simple heat energy. What was heat but energy that was moving at an incredibly quick pace? A heater that was charged and conducted by body heat in general was something she had yet to see on the market. It wouldn’t require much, and recharge time was guaranteed!
“What about a heater that is charged by a person’s body heat? Carry it inside a pocket close to a warm part of the body, and then it can be stored and pushed out!”

"Unless the person's body heat is already low, but if I combine that with a rechargeable kinetic battery as a back up, it could, in theory, create a circular cycle of perpetual motion and therefore heat!"
He pulled his notebook forward, beginning to scribble out the notes. He liked talking with Zelda. She humored his inventions. At least she had thus far. No one else seemed to think much of his inventions. Though, he worried about inconveniencing his roommate. Perhaps he should look into renting lab space? A problem for future Albedo to solve. Even a broom closet would be better than having bits and bobs of mechanical pieces and gears strewn about the tiny dorm room.
"Thank you, Zelda."

“And I suppose I’ll be getting a fair percentage of the profits?”
She folded her arms and looked at him coolly. It had been her idea to pitch body heat, but it had been Albedo’s to craft the battery part. He had already done enough with the ice cream machine, and a part of her felt cheated that all she got was free ice cream. Even if the birthday cake ice cream it created was heavenly.

Albedo gave a slow blink. He hadn’t realized she wanted to partake in the profits. But it made sense. He had spitballed his ideas off of her and only because she had thrown the idea out had he gotten exactly what he needed. He didn’t want the only person who understood his inventions and humored him. He didn’t want her getting fed up or not helping him anymore.
“Uh, yeah.” He cleared his throat. “We could make a contract, if you want? And include all inventions you help me with?”

Zelda reached into the folds of her lit up hallgown. Dorothea had sold her on the fact the gown had pockets. Her hand fell on the comfortable warm metal of her Slate. Call her a tech big, but she felt more comfortable with her device on hand. It’d save her from boredom at this social gathering. Pulling it out and activating, she opened the calculator app and began crunching numbers.
“I’m not asking for a large margin of your profits, since you’re the one crafting them. However, I ask should you use my ideas if I collaborate with you on an invention, I receive,” she finished her final calculation, “10 percent. Is that fair?”

Albedo considered it. Most of his inventions weren't out to turn a profit. Mostly, it was so he could continue to fund future experiments and other inventions. Though the cost of getting patents for said inventions did eat into his costs... Then there was sourcing materials. He supposed all the more challenge for him. Especially if they were both to gain from this. It was only fair. Since it was her idea.
"And 50% if we both work on it," he said. "If you put in half the work on it, you get half the proceeds."
This was new for him. He had never invited anyone to work with him on his projects before. However, he respected Zelda as an intellectual. He had a feeling, she would be a lab partner he would be sore to miss out on.
"We can back date the ice cream machine to include it."
